This May, Carolina Castro participated in the UTSA-LED: Counselor Preparation in Multicultural Oaxaca program.

“My Maymester in Oaxaca was one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had. I learned from people whose knowledge came from lived experiences and deep connections to their communities, which gave me a whole new appreciation for Indigenous knowledge. Seeing traditional healing and modern medicine work side by side showed me how different ways of knowing can come together in meaningful ways. Beyond the classroom, I reconnected with my Mexican roots by exploring colorful streets, camping in the mountains, and spending time at the beach with friends. I came home with unforgettable memories, lifelong friendships, and a deeper appreciation for my culture.”

Last summer, Julissa Rojano participated in the Study Abroad Business Immersion in Italy program.

“This experience helped me understand how business works in Italy and opened my eyes to the global business world. It was my first time in Europe and my first big trip without my family, which showed me I was capable of stepping out on my own. I fell in love with the food, the architecture, and the culture, and I can’t wait to go back and make even more memories!”

Recent UT San Antonio and Study Abroad alum Enrique Figueroa was nominated for the CineFestival Mesquite Award for Best Short Film in Texas for his 2025 documentary “Memoria, Verdad, y Justicia,” filmed in his recent Study Abroad experience in La Plata and Buenos Aires, Argentina. So far, the film has screened at the UT San Antonio Santikos Screening, and the 46th annual CineFestival in San Antonio. The documentary is awaiting screening at Austin Film Showcase, El Paso Film Festival, Puerto Rico International Film Festival, and Houston Latino Film Festival.

During the Study Abroad program ‘New Cinema and Social Paradigms in Argentina,’ students were introduced to the complexities of the country in the midst of a socio-economic transitional period, and how these transformations are documented by local digital media makers. The goal of this program included exploring Argentine socio-cultural issues and lifestyle through the history of Argentine Cinema, and practice film techniques under the instruction of established filmmakers and cinematographers.

Enrique recalls his experience abroad, “This has been the longest I’ve been out of the country, and I loved it. I got to experience a different culture, food, commute, etc. While it was very different from San Antonio, I felt very welcomed every time. Learning how the films in Argentina talk about their political and economic status inspired me to give more meaning to my art. I made memories that I will never forget, and I am glad UT San Antonio was able to help me make this posible.”

UTSA student Zoe Anderson spent Summer 2025 studying abroad in Meknes, Morocco, through the Department of Defense-funded Project Global Officer (Project GO) scholarship. During the two-month intensive program, she completed the equivalent of a full year of Modern Standard Arabic while practicing the language daily with native speakers.

She says, “Outside the classroom, I immersed myself in Moroccan culture—exploring the bustling medinas of Meknes and Fez, wandering through the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, and traveling to coastal cities like Rabat and Tangier. I also ventured into the Middle Atlas Mountains, sampled traditional Moroccan dishes, and experienced the warmth and hospitality of my host community.

This program not only strengthened my language skills but also deepened my cross-cultural understanding and adaptability. I returned home with lasting friendships, unforgettable memories, and a broader global perspective that will stay with me in my personal, academic, and professional journey.”

Congratulations to Ana Catalina Vallejo Chapa on being named a Lafayette Fellow!

During her time at UTSA, Ana embraced global learning by studying abroad three times—in France, Italy, and the United Kingdom—and also spent a semester in Dakar, Senegal as a Boren Scholar. These international experiences helped shape her academic journey and global perspective.

We are proud to celebrate Ana’s incredible achievement and wish her continued success as she pursues her next chapter in France. 🇫🇷
