SA Catholic Schools Community - The future successes of your children depend on your efforts, now; please get involved & engaged in our Catholic Schools however you can!

A Message from the Superintendent: ...John Mein has agreed to continue as Interim Principal of Antonian through the 2022-2023 school year...a timeline and process has been established to inform and guide a Search Committee in its efforts to identify the individual to lead Antonian in its next chapter.

The search process begins this Spring with feedback from a Parent Survey, which the ACP parent community will receive this week. These responses will be shared with the Search Committee to inform their thinking on the needs of Antonian. [ACP parents] are encouraged to participate in this process by completing the survey by May 20th.

Antonian’s council president shared these thoughts in discussing the search process: ...[Antonian's] leader must have a myriad of skills in addition to being able to get today’s school
community to rally behind them. Selecting the most talented and most committed Principal is vital to the continued success of Antonian. We look forward to engaging in this process to continue the Antonian tradition of excellence for many years to come!

Below are the key stages of the search process:
May 2022 Parent Climate Survey
Aug - Sept 2022 Listening Sessions with Faculty & Staff
Oct 2022 Search Committee Member Candidates Nominated
Nov-Dec 2022 School Council Review & Finalization of Search Committee Members

You may have heard over the last few months about Pope Francis calling for a Synod of Bishops in 2023 to discuss the aspirations for the Church of the Third Millennium. To that end, all Catholic Bishops throughout the world were asked to “walk together” with all their parishes to prepare for the Synod. In collaboration with the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Deacon Del Eulberg and Lacey Sorrell will lead the local effort here at St. Peter’s Parish following guidelines set by the Archbishop’s office.

Through listening and discernment rooted in the Holy Spirit, the People of God are being called to contribute to this process—the synodal process—by which the Church deepens in understanding of her mission and looks toward the future.

Each parish in the Archdiocese is asked to host “listening sessions” with various ministries focusing on two main questions of the synod: Question #1. A Synodal Church, in announcing the Gospel, “journeys together.” How is this journeying together happening today in your parish? In your organization? In the Archdiocese? Question #2. What steps does the Spirit invite us to take in order to grow in our “journeying together?”

To ensure that we receive feedback from a good cross section of our St. Peter’s Parish, we have launched this initiative with ministry leads from 25 ministries. The leads have been trained on how to host the listening sessions in their weekly/monthly gatherings and how to collect the feedback. If you are a ministry lead and were not contacted for the initial phase and would like to participate, please contact Deacon Del or Lacey Sorrell.

However, we will also open this process up to all parishioners who wish to participate; therefore, we will host a “general listening session” on Monday, April 25 at 7:00 pm.

Synod of Synodality at OLPH 03/11/2022

https://www.olph.org/synod-of-sinodality
Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish hosted the first Synod Listening Session on January 22. Seven more sessions are scheduled in the month of March and early April 2022. Additional sessions will be scheduled, as needed. Each session seats 60 participants divided into ten groups of six persons per table. The six include the table facilitator who guides the sharing and a scribe who writes down the main points. Both table facilitator and scribe have participated in a Training Session.

Pope Francis wants to hear from you, to listen to you, and so does OLPH parish! The next Listening Session is scheduled for:
Friday, March 18, 10:00-11:30

Sign up by using the QR code below and on the parish website or call the parish office and leave your name and email address. There are 2 questions you are invited to reflect on and share about during the Listening Session: 1. A synodal Church, in announcing the Gospel, “journeys together.” How is this “journeying together” happening today in your parish, Archdiocese, the universal Church? 2. What steps does the Spirit invite us to take in order to grow in our “journeying together”?

The very act of coming together to listen to, and share with each other, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, is synodality -journeying together –in action. "The purpose of this synod is not to produce more documents." Rather, the Handbook on the Synod continues, the synod "is intended to inspire people to dream about the church we are called to be, to make people's hopes flourish, to stimulate trust, to bind up wounds, to weave new and deeper relationships, to learn from one another, to build bridges, to enlighten minds, warm hearts, and restore strength to our hands for our common mission."

Synod of Synodality at OLPH In what experts have called ‘the biggest consultation exercise in human history", Pope Francis is reaching out to the entire Catholic Church, through a two-year process of listening sessions—officially called The Synod on Synodality 2021-23—to hear from the People of God at the grassroots leve...

Archdiocesan Synod Liaisons:
BISHOP MIKE BOULETTE - Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio,
Vicar General & Moderator of the Curia

JUAN CARLOS RODRIGUEZ - Director for Strategic Planning & Priorities, Archdiocese of San Antonio

The Archdiocesan synodal process will be conveyed and led by Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, M.Sp.S. in special gatherings of clergy and faithful to offer him assistance in setting the direction for the future of our local Church. The outcomes do not include addressing doctrinal questions or Church teaching. Instead, it will be focused on pastoral planning, touching on all elements of the local Church. Before discerning its implementation, the Archbishop, along with the Synod Steering Committee, will listen to recommendations and suggestions of the faithful.

To have a Synod means ‘to walk together.’ A Synod is a dynamic diocesan planning activity. While it is centrally enabled (by a bishop or the Pope), it is also locally guided by leaders at every level (pastors, parish leaders, and the faithful). The Synod strives for listening to the real questions and authentic needs of the local Church and sifts for the real issues with a wider vision where subsidiarity and creativity are greatly needed, encouraged, and embraced.

The unfolding of the Synodal Process at the local level will involve:
• Discernment through listening, to create space for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

• Accessibility, in order to ensure that as many people as possible can participate, regardless of location, language, education, socio-economic status, ability/disability, and material resources.

• Cultural awareness to celebrate and embrace the diversity within local communities.

• Inclusion, making every effort to involve those who feel excluded or marginalized.

• Partnership based on the model of a co-responsible Church.

• Respect for the rights, dignity, and opinion of each participant.

• Accurate syntheses that truly captures the range of critical and appreciative perspectives of all responses, including views that are expressed only by a minority of participants.

• Transparency, ensuring that processes of invitation, involvement, inclusion, and aggregation of input are clear and well communicated.

• Fairness, ensuring that participation in the listening process treats each person equally, so that every voice can be duly heard.

Members of the Archdiocesan students, parents, alumni, teachers, staff, administration, and friends that constitute Justice4Catholic Education, continue to support Antonian and other Archdiocesan Catholic Schools. Thank you for your continued sharing of the injustices you and countless others have experienced or witnessed by Superintendent West’s shameful, non-Christian, and destructive leadership.

The Antonian community has been in a struggle with Archbishop Gustavo and Superintendent West since September. Many of you are unaware of West’s incomprehensible actions and decisions, all supported by Archbishop Gustavo. Here is an overview as described by our Archdiocesan contacts:

August: Antonian principal, Mr. Petersen, is forced by West to accept retirement at the conclusion of the 2021-22 school year
Mr. John Mein is assigned to Antonian by Superintendent West without principal’s consultation or school council member approval and rumored to have been promised the principal’s job in 2022
West strips Mr. Petersen of all his administrative authority regarding human resources and budget and transfers them to Mein upon his arrival with no school council input

September - West promotes Mr. Mein to assistant principal WITHOUT principal’s consultation and despite Mein never holding a high school administrative or teaching position
West dictates Human Sexuality policy changes to Antonian Student-Parent Handbook, generating a public outcry, and 800+ signatures on a petition to reconsider the language in the policy while respecting the Catechism. Mr. Mein is charged with the responsibility to resolve this matter, yet to date, he has not followed through, sweeping this issue and the concerned parties under the carpet https://www.expressnews.com/news/local/article/Unease-and-rumors-as-a-Catholic-prep-school-in-16462710.php

September - Mr. Petersen is abruptly terminated by Superintendent West during the middle of the school day without just cause or due process and escorted off campus
West deceives the ACP community by lying in a public letter, stating "Principal Petersen had resigned"
Without school council consultation, West immediately appoints Mein as Antonian’s “Interim Principal”, ignoring 17-year assistant principal veteran Diann Montemayor as a viable interim candidate.
Despite Antonian School Council’s unanimous request to immediately post and establish a search committee for a new principal, requests are ignored by the Archdiocese, West, and Mein

December - West’s reign of terror continues when, on invitation of Kairos students and team members, Mr. Petersen attends an off-campus Kairos retreat Mass to receive Holy Communion with seniors and underclassmen.
Immediately after the Kairos retreat, and without supervisory authority, West fires Diann Montemayor, a member of the Antonian family for over 4 decades as a student, parent, and administrator. Montemayor was volunteering at the retreat and was fired for not removing Mr. Petersen when he arrived to celebrate Mass with the students! It is difficult to even write these words as this egregious, non-Christian, and callous act by West is incomprehensible. In a matter of minutes Superintendent West destroys the career of one of the most respected, beloved and Christ servant staff members in the Archdiocese.

How West can be so evil-driven, yet be permitted to lead Catholic schools is surreal and appalling, as is the unfettered power bestowed on her by Archbishop Gustavo.

Interim Principal John Mein presides during her firing, yet does not defend Mrs. Montemayor or petition for her to remain, abandoning the lifeblood of Antonian, and the one person who could have mentored him

Mrs. Montemayor is DENIED her right to file grievance that is detailed in the employee handbook. She is never given an audience by HR or anyone at the Archdiocese.

Volumes of letters, emails, phone calls, outreach by various community entities across the Archdiocese to Archbishop Gustavo are ignored.

Without any investigation or verification, and despite the Antonian community’s efforts to expose West’s bullying, false accusations, harassment. and discriminatory actions, Archbishop Gustavo writes a public letter to the Antonian community that he continues to "stand by the decisions of Superintendent West." The snub from Archbishop Gustavo crushes Montemayor and the entire Antonian community

West gathers and threatens all Antonian administrative staff for emergency meeting. "Support me or start looking for a job!"
January - Despite 500+ petition requests, Antonian’s Principal vacancy is still not posted, and a search committee has yet to be created

Archbishop names new Catholic Schools superintendent 02/12/2022

Please disseminate this to all of your contacts, and share on social media. The truth matters! [email protected]

The numbers speak for themselves. Her "transformative" tenure as superintendent has not served our Archdiocesan schools or our children very well. To see the unimpressive resume of our superintendent, and her complete lack of qualifications, click on the Express News link below. (Unfortunately, this requires a subscription to read.) Then, take the time to review the resumes of the Dallas and Houston Superintendents. The credentials of these individuals is dramatically superior.

It is no surprise that someone without any experience as a principal is failing so miserably at managing our Archdiocesan schools. This is the price we have all paid for the Archdiocese not performing due diligence and SEARCHING for the best talent.

Under Superintendent Davis, Mrs. West's predecessor, surveys were sent annually to all administrators to anonymously submit feedback regarding the Department of Catholic Schools -- how well is the superintendent's office serving your needs? This annual exercise STOPPED as soon as Superintendent West took over. Why? We would challenge you to restart this survey, and our administrators should demand this be reinstituted. This would once again provide a SAFE forum to provide feedback, and would allow Archbishop Gustavo to learn the truth about his Superintendent.

Here is her path to power and subsequent abuse thereof:
- English Teacher at Holy Spirit
- Vice Principal at Holy Spirit, forced to resign!
- Curriculum consultant for Good Shepherd Network
- Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, again no experience managing budgets or personnel
- "Interim Superintendent" for 4 months, then appointed Superintendent
- The rest is history

To reiterate, when West took over in 2014, there were 13,300 students enrolled in the Archdiocese. She "immediately reorganized" adding 5 positions to boost enrollment. Fast forward, now 8600 students in 2021. Had any of us performed this poorly in our own professions, we would be unemployed, not commended for our "great" work. Nice job Superintendent West. Who is next on your chopping block? St. Gerard? Mount Sacred Heart? Holy Name?

West is the only superintendent to have never run a school [e.g. Haney principal for 16 years, asst superintendent for 5, etc.] These are the FACTS.

Dallas 2014: 15,000 students, 37 schools;
2021: 13,560 36 schools = 10% drop
Houston 2014: 19,000 students 61 schools;
2021 17,000 students, 56 schools = 10% drop
San Antonio 2014: 13,300 students, 43 schools;
2021 8,600 students 36 schools = 35% drop
