I’m living in a dream! I often share with fellow early childhood professionals “Don’t go back and say ‘Tessa said’ because no one cares what Tessa says. Always point to the research!” Some of my participants that I have had the pleasure of spending time with this year made these joke shirts for us. I hope the legacy I leave with anyone is that all children deserve dignity! I am humbled at this act of gratitude, fun, and connection. I love them, I love you. Yes, you.

This is true for a majority of the child care field workforce. Most of the brain is developed by age 5, these professionals should be paid well to ensure children have the best foundation for that development. The stress of the child care professional can directly impact the experiences of the child (though so many try to ensure it doesn’t.)

I began my journey as an educator controlling children’s movement and opportunities out of fear (even though I myself had a playful upbringing with unstructured independent play)!

I have attempted to unpack why I fell into worrying and concern when it came to young children “just playing”. I share my pedagogical evolution in hopes that if you too are uncomfortable with “play” right now, there may be some ideas or information you would be willing to consider in finding peace in allowing and trusting children to learn in the ways they were always meant to!
