What is Juneteenth?
President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation- declaring all enslaved people to be set free on January 1, 1863. Despite this- Texas continued the practice of slavery for an additional 2 years.
In the Spring of 1865, General Gordan Granger traveled with federal troops to Galveston, Texas to share the news that all slaves were free.
The following year, "Jubilee Day" was organized on June 19th and celebrated by those in Texas who had been freed. Today- it's a national holiday and the celebration of Juneteenth has spread across the United States
