My fellow Fi****ms Instructors and Enthusiasts:
After the 2016 election we started to see a lot more of the Gun Culture 2.0 students. These are people who do not fit the 'traditional,' gun owner profile most folks have in their heads, and it is something that was encouraging to see.
On the end of this current election cycle I'm expecting to see a lot more of the non-traditional student than we ever have before, and it is something we need to take very, very seriously. Self defense is a right we are all entitled to, and we MUST NOT squander this opportunity to 'preach the gospel,' of it.
Represent our ideals well and we could help secure them for generations to come, while maybe saving some lives in the process.

Excellent match yesterday with Bandera IDPA! There are some top notch shooters and great folks at that club, and Tim Reedy of TDR.Training has built an excellent shooting culture that supports and pushes each other to their best.
I’ve been stealing some goal-oriented mindset from Hsoi and and trying to focus on the process instead of results.
Things worked out well except for 2 Hits on a Non-Threat. (The heat was killer and it was on our final stage).

Do you record your performance?
I dry fire daily, and record every drill, and my par times on them. I also include notes and any thoughts I may have, so I record my work immediately after I’m done. I also do this with every match I shoot and every live-fire session I have.
I believe one of the best ways to improve and build confidence is to see it in black and white. It lets you have tangible results and see how far you’ve come.

Recently some very close friends had an incident in their neighborhood. At 5 in the morning a lady was knocking on doors looking for help.
She had been drugged, r***d and dumped out of a moving truck onto the nearby county road.
It took 2 hours and 15 minutes for the Sheriffs Officer to respond, and it took even longer for EMS to arrive to treat her road rash all over her back and her Broken Arm. This was in a very nice neighborhood in a very affluent county and area.
The local city PD wouldn’t come out because it wasn’t in their jurisdiction.
To me this just once again illustrates that If something terrible ever happens to you or your loved ones, you are on your own. The police aren’t going to magically swoop in and save you, and EMS aren’t going to get there in time before someone bleeds out or succumbs to traumatic injury.
You are your own first responder, and you need to prepare accordingly.

Had a great range day yesterday with some of the best.
Ran the 2019 FBI qual cold, 100/100 but I threw some shots high and one low like a do**us.
Did some Some skip loading (that’s the parrot on the Rangemaster Q) as well as the “Spaulding 9x9.” We also ran “Side Hustle +P” (9.07 clean) and the Rangemaster Advanced Bullseye (185 cause apparently I can make 25 yard shots but throw them low at 7yds).

Had One student for a private lesson on Competition Basics, then a great range session with Tim of TDR.Training and Breezy of Four Winds Fi****ms Training today!
Ran through some new techniques on fixing recoil anticipation with students, then did the Advanced Super Test (pass with 276/300) and the No Fail Test. The ”no fail” (one round from concealment at 25yds in 3.5s par time, done 10 times) was not a Pass today, but I’m happy with the performance considering how busy I’ve been lately.

Enjoying the spring evening while doing a little after action review of my private lessons today.
If I teach a private lesson or coaching session I always try to write an AAR using notes I made during the lesson in my smaller notebook. Then I transcribe my notes in expanded form to my full notebook and send an AAR to the student in a follow up email.

So I recently learned that pre WW2, there were few official “credentials” so a common test of competence was 5 shots on a playing card (larger, before the WW paper shortages) at 5 paces, in 5 seconds, with a pistol.
This is now a common test used to gauge performance in a fun way, and is signed by the person doing the evaluation.
I earned this signed card last Saturday at the Rangemaster Advanced Instructor certification, 5 shots in 5 seconds at 5 yards.

In my recent dry fire work for competition I have started practicing different start positions. They have created more of a challenge than I anticipated because of my immediate desire to get to the speed I already have with a regular “low ready,” start.
Taking the time to slow down and get the solid results we need as a base is something we all have to do, but most of us struggle with. The speed will come with time and practice, and that’s the only way it will come.
Natural talent and the newest, most expensive equipment won’t get you very far.
