Girl with Grit was formally recognized through a proclamation by Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones for Women’s Equality Day.

“Whereas,
The City of San Antonio recognizes
Women’s Equality Day as an annual observance marking the certification of the 19th Amendment and acknowledging its role in expanding voting rights in the United States; and
Whereas,
Women’s Equality Day serves as a
reminder that equal access to opportunity is an ongoing responsibility shared by communities, institutions, and organizations to support equal access to opportunity in education and the workforce; and
Whereas,
Girl with Grit provides hands-on
educational programming, mentorship, and workforce readiness opportunities for girls and young women. They are “Building Equality Together,” through STEM and skilled trades events designed to expand access to educational enrichment opportunities; and
Whereas,
the organization collaborates with
schools, community partners, and workforce programs to broaden project-based learning and technical skill development opportunities for youth throughout the community; and
Whereas,
these efforts align with the spirit of
Women’s Equality Day by supporting equitable access to learning environments and career pathway exploration opportunities that contribute to a more inclusive future in workplaces and classrooms.” - Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones

Our founder has a lot going on in the 2026-2027 school year!

Blythe Zemel is the Founder and Executive Director of Girl with Grit, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth through hands-on education, workforce development, life skills, and emotional well-being. Raised in inner-city Houston and now based in the San Antonio metropolitan area, Blythe’s experiences shaped her passion for helping youth build confidence, grit, independence, and practical skills.

Blythe holds a B.A. in Art History from the University of Houston and is completing her Master’s degree in counseling, with plans to pursue her LPC-A in Texas in Fall 2026. She will begin a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies in January 2027, with a focus on developing youth leadership and community engagement.

Blythe is also serving children and adolescents through AmeriCorps and Communities In Schools, where she incorporates project-based, hands-on services with her clinical clients to promote confidence, emotional well-being, and practical skill-building.

Since founding Girl with Grit in 2020, Blythe has helped the organization reach more than 18,000 youth across Texas through workshops, camps, and curriculum focused on tools, trades, safety, life skills, and career exploration. Through partnerships including the Region 20 Education Service Center, she continues to expand access to hands-on learning opportunities for young people.

Her work bridges practical education and mental health, creating opportunities for youth to develop the skills, confidence, and grit needed to succeed.

Today the founder of Girl with Grit worked with a youth action team from Taiwan currently participating in the 2026 Global Youth Action Plan, supported by the Youth Development Administration, Ministry of Education, Taiwan.

They are consulting with Girl with Grit as they develop a hands-on educational program for elementary school students that encourages observation, self-expression, collaboration, confidence, and the ability to turn ideas into action through real-life learning experiences. ❤️

We are incredibly honored to have been recognized by the Youth Development Administration, Ministry of Education, Republic of China (Taiwan) for the work Girl with Grit is doing to empower young people through hands-on, project-based learning.

What began as a vision to help girls discover their confidence, creativity, and potential through real-world experiences is now opening doors for an exciting international exchange of ideas.
We were especially inspired to learn that our approach to experiential learning has caught the attention of youth development leaders in Taiwan, who expressed interest in learning more about how Girl with Grit designs engaging experiences that encourage young people to build, create, and lead.

We are excited about the possibility of sharing what we have learned through Girl with Grit and contributing to conversations about experiential education, career exploration, STEM, skilled trades, and youth empowerment on an international level.

This is a powerful reminder that when we invest in young people and give them opportunities to build, create, explore, and lead, the impact can reach far beyond our own community.

It was an honor for Girl with Grit to attend the Texas Su***de Prevention Symposium in New Braunfels this week.

As a youth nonprofit, the work of su***de prevention is especially important when we consider that su***de was the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10–14 and 15–24 in the United States in 2023.

The numbers behind suicidal thoughts are equally concerning. In 2023, 2 in 10 U.S. high school students seriously considered attempting su***de, and nearly 1 in 10 reported an attempt.

These statistics remind us why prevention cannot begin only when a young person reaches a crisis. We have to create spaces where children and teens feel seen, heard, connected, and supported.

We are grateful to learn alongside the incredible professionals and advocates working to make su***de prevention a priority across Texas. 💚

Let’s keep talking. Let’s keep listening. And most importantly, let’s keep showing up for our youth.

For the 2026-2027 school year, we want to work with your youth to build a garden box, compost bin, or a bench at a school in your community!

If are a school or community group with a project in mind, please reach out to [email protected]. We will help you to get the ball rolling on a consultation about fundraising, project management, and completion.

Building these items alongside kids for The DoSeum was a blast!
