Well said!

Saying dyslexia is an important part of understanding. Dyslexia is the most common learning difference. It is believed that 10-20% of the population has some form of dyslexia.

When we say dyslexia, we
🧠deepen our understanding
👄provide a name for struggles
💪🏼empower those with dyslexia

‼️Did you know that the United States Department of Education sent out a letter in 2015 to all schools clarifying that there is nothing in the IDEA that prohibits the use of the term dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia in an IDEA evaluation, eligibility determination, or IEP document?

For quite some time, there has been a shift in language within the community from the person first to identify first. This is a personal decision, but as we see the being highlighted and the movement for options to identify on platforms like LinkedIn, awareness of this shift in language for neurodiverse thinkers is essential.

So, let’s say dyslexia. Let’s educate ourselves so that we can better serve and honor our students. 🦋

📘✨ Did you know ALTA offers two distinct certification pathways — Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) and Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) — to best support students with dyslexia and written-language disorders?

🔍 CALP professionals provide explicit, systematic, sequential, multisensory, structured language instruction to teach reading, writing, study, and test-taking skills.

🧠 CALT professionals go further — they are diagnostic, prescriptive, intensive, offering individualized multisensory interventions to build accuracy, fluency, and independence in reading and writing.

🏆 Both paths uphold ALTA’s rigorous standards — graduates pass the national competency exam, adhere to ethical practice, and commit to lifelong learning.

Whether your strengths and interests lie in direct instruction (CALP) or in more in-depth therapeutic intervention (CALT), ALTA offers a pathway for you to make a meaningful difference. 💡

👥 Join us in raising the bar for dyslexia support — because every learner deserves expert care.

Dyslexia is "entirely unrelated to a person's intelligence or cognitive potential."

The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) affirmed today that dyslexia, a reading disability, is entirely unrelated to a person's intelligence or cognitive potential. Dyslexic individuals possess the capacity to think, lead, and achieve at the highest levels, and countless have gone on to accomplish extraordinary achievements across every field.

IDA stands firmly in support of dyslexic learners by advancing evidence-based reading instruction grounded in the science of reading, while also championing the unique strengths, resilience, and potential that define this community.

Dyslexia is the persistence of difficulties in reading, spelling, and writing despite appropriate instruction and opportunity to learn.

Dyslexia reflects differences in how the brain processes language, particularly the sounds and structure of words. Without specialized instruction, these challenges can persist across the lifespan.

The good news: evidence-based, multisensory structured language instruction is the best approach for supporting students with dyslexia.

For 40 years, the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) has set the gold standard for credentialing dyslexia professionals, preparing Academic Language Therapists and Practitioners to deliver specialized, effective intervention.

Dyslexia impacts individuals every single day; in classrooms, in workplaces, and at kitchen tables across the country.

📚 Dyslexia is a neurobiological difference that affects accurate and/or fluent word recognition and spelling.
📊 It affects approximately 15-20% of the population
💬 Without proper intervention, dyslexia can impact academic achievement, confidence, and emotional well-being.

But here’s what matters most: With the right instruction, individuals with dyslexia can learn to read and thrive.

For 40 years, the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) has credentialed professionals who are extensively trained in structured, evidence-based dyslexia intervention. ALTA-Certified Academic Language Therapists represent the gold standard in dyslexia therapy — bringing diagnostic, prescriptive, and individualized instruction to every learner they serve.

When families and schools choose an ALTA-certified professional, they are choosing expertise grounded in research, rigorous preparation, and a commitment to ethical, high-quality care.

Reading struggles can impact far more than academic performance. They can shape how a child feels about themselves as a learner.

Research shows poor readers are at greater risk for anxiety (Francis, Caruana, Hudson, & McArthur, 2024), but this does not have to be the outcome.

ALTA-Certified professionals play a crucial role in treating dyslexia by developing tailored therapeutic and intervention plans that meet each student’s unique needs. With explicit, structured, and compassionate instruction, we help students build skills, confidence, and hope.

With the proper instruction and support, all students can succeed.
