All children have the right to literacy, which includes appropriate, evidence-based reading instruction. Teachers deserve access to high-quality professional development and instructional coaching. We are here to equip teachers and parents, so they can be effective literacy leaders for our children.

From Sold a Story, Episode 4:

Robinson: Listen, I devour words. I love literature and books. But everybody don’t have to love to read and write. But everybody has a right to learn to read and write. So that whole, “I want them to love.” I don’t want them to love. I want them to know how to do it. Love comes later.

Yes! I have had this unpopular opinion for years. We don’t expect children to love math, history, science, etc. We certainly don’t soften instruction surrounding these subjects so kids don’t dislike them. Let’s stop romanticizing literacy instruction and start teaching children to read!

Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong 10/26/2022

Corinne Adams watches her son's lessons during Zoom school and discovers a dismaying truth: He can't read. Little Charlie isn't the only one. Sixty-five percent of fourth graders are not proficient readers. Kids need to learn specific skills to become good readers, and in many schools, those skills are not being taught.

Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong There's an idea about how children learn to read that's held sway in schools for more than a generation — even though it was proven wrong by cognitive scientists decades ago. Teaching methods based on this idea can make it harder for children to learn how to read. In this new podcast, host Emily H...

Stellar advice from Dr. Moats. English is complex, not crazy. Our brains are pattern-seeking devices, so we must emphasize the patterns during instruction.

One of the biggest misconceptions in early literacy is dismissing reading difficulty as “late blooming.” Unfortunately, research does not support this idea. Core instruction moves on, and late bloomers never bloom.

"It was hell"...life before learning to read at age 62 03/01/2022

Just this week in Boston, I met a traveling physician who shared his secret with me. He never learned to read or write. He is successful, articulate, and obviously intelligent, but he has spent a lifetime hiding his shame through coping mechanisms. He wondered aloud to me what his life would be like if he ever learned to read.

This is why I do what I do. All teachers must be equipped to teach reading because all children and adults deserve to be literate. You may think subliteracy is rare, but national scores show that only 35% of students are proficient or above in reading. The remaining children become subliterate adults who spend their lives hiding the fact that they never learned to read or write.

In America, about 3 out of children learn how to read proficiently.

Reading is the most studied facet of human learning. Schools must align instructional practices to what we understand about the reading brain.
