Attend in person at any location on my schedule, with select courses also available online through livestream. I currently have courses scheduled in San Antonio, Midland and Laredo, with Houston (Baytown), Corpus Christi, El Paso and the DFW area being added.

Program members also receive access to course materials, select course replays and resources, and can direct message me when they have a DOT compliance question or need clarification on something.

**A $49 MILLION verdict in West Texas — and there are some important DOT compliance lessons every motor carrier should pay attention to.**

On May 21, an Ector County jury recently returned a $49 million verdict against a trucking company and its driver following a fatal commercial motor vehicle crash near Midland that occurred on January 27, 2025.

There are several things about this case that stood out to me.

According to the attorneys representing the family, the driver had repeatedly exceeded state hours-of-service limits and falsified her records of duty status. The company also reportedly had access to ELD information that could have alerted management to those violations, yet the driver was allowed to continue operating.

The jury ultimately assigned **65% of the responsibility to the motor carrier and 35% to the driver**, finding both grossly negligent.

But here's another part that caught my attention as a DOT compliance instructor:

**The company's training program became part of the case.**

According to the attorneys, the company had no driver training manual, no safety manual, no written safe-driving policies and procedures, no third-party safety training, no group safety meetings, and no periodic driver performance reviews.

**Think about that. Training became part of the evidence.**

DOT compliance isn't just about passing an audit or getting through a roadside inspection without a violation. When a serious accident happens, people start looking backward.

What did the driver know?

What did management know?

Were ELD alerts being monitored?

Were violations being addressed?

**And what training had actually been provided?**

This happened in West Texas, my primary DOT training area with such a high risk of exposure to this exact situation.

September 16–17 – Commercial Vehicle & Brake Inspector (2-Day Course)

The DOT Compliance Manager course is designed for anyone responsible for keeping a motor carrier compliant with the FMCSRs. Whether you're new to DOT safety or have years of experience, we'll spend two days walking through the regulations and, more importantly, how to apply them in the real world.

The Commercial Vehicle & Brake Inspector course teaches participants how to properly inspect commercial vehicles and meet the FMCSA inspector qualification requirements under §396.25.

Tuition is $1250 per course.
