Mud kitchen addition: recycled flowers! 🌸After seeing a post from an early childhood educator about recycling flowers in the mud kitchen, I have been doing the same. The kids are recycling, composting, and best of all having fun!
Gross motor play is critical in the early years. It increases eye hand coordination. It lays the foundation for fine motor skills. And, possibly most importantly, kids love it!

Ever wonder how to respond when your child excitedly shows you something they’ve made and you’re not sure what it is? When a child shows me something they have built or painted or drawn or in some way made, my response is is something like, “What did you create?” I used to say my ideas - “Oh, is that a ______?” But, I’ve learned children know what they’re doing and they can tell me! When they tell me I usually say, “Wow.” And then I try to point out something in the creation rather than giving praise. For example - I see you made some diagonal lines there, or I see you did some color mixing. This has proven to give them confidence rather than judgment. When one of my littles showed me the whiteboard above I said, “Oh, wow! Can you tell me about that?” And she said, “I drew a big scream!” I love this! And it’s soooo much richer and more creative than anything I could’ve thought!

I’ve purchased caterpillars before to have the littles witness the life cycle. But this year it occurred right in the garden. The littles are incredibly observant and fascinated by nature. I love their sense of wonder.

In the five years we’ve been open we’ve missed very few outdoor times. In fact, I think we’ve gone out every day even if our outdoor time has been cut short. Children need to get their energy out and feel the outdoors - even on cold, hot, and rainy days. Not only is outside time good for the soul, there are so many lessons to be learned, too. How do we put a jacket on? What about rain boots? What do you think you’ll need in certain kinds of weather? What can you do if you’re cold or hot? How can you help a classmate?

These are all things we do here at Tiny Seeds Nature School that prepare children to enter whatever formal schooling they will attend. And sometimes we ARE the formal schooling! In addition to all these things, we read, write, do math, and learn about the world around us and each other. If this looks like a great fit for your family, call us! We’re accepting inquiries for 4-5 year olds beginning in August and we’d love to give you a tour!
