We focus on developing children's social and emotional skills through play with peers and play in nature.

The littles never cease to amaze me. Their creativity, imagination, recall, and enthusiasm give me the passion to continue doing what I’m doing. Such incredible learning happening with no table time, no worksheets, no craft projects, and no skill and drill. What we do have are art supplies, materials to use, the Mat Man song, letter links, and fun!

I love when the littles discover making obstacle courses. It’s happened every year and there’s so much to love about this type of play. First off - all the loose parts. Reconfigured, reimagined, reconstructed. Such sustained play! Also the gross motor building, heavy lifting, confidence building, balance building. Add in the communication and social skill building and there is literally nothing not to like!

There’s nothing I see wrong with the first project. The final products were so pretty. But, I can’t remember the littles being excited or knowing what it was we were doing. Basically it was for the parents and for a beautiful display. The little one in the other photo was asked if he wanted paint, said yes, and was given paint, brushes, and paper. He told me very excitedly, “Look, Ms. Monica! I’m making the planet we live on!” He’s three. For me, the difference in the two situations is that his creation was so important to him. It was meaningful. It was more creative than I could’ve imagined for him. In my teaching journey it’s been my experience that when we give littles the tools they will create what they imagine rather than what I imagine for them. And, wow! It’s so much more creative!

It’s been a great couple of weeks getting back into the swing of things. I’m looking forward to seeing how the littles grow this year.

The last day of school already seems so far away, yet I’m just now able to find time to post about it! What an amazing school year it was. Great families, such fantastic littles, and so much fun and learning. I’m excited to see what 26-27 holds. Happy July!

Mud kitchen addition: recycled flowers! 🌸After seeing a post from an early childhood educator about recycling flowers in the mud kitchen, I have been doing the same. The kids are recycling, composting, and best of all having fun!

Gross motor play is critical in the early years. It increases eye hand coordination. It lays the foundation for fine motor skills. And, possibly most importantly, kids love it!

Ever wonder how to respond when your child excitedly shows you something they’ve made and you’re not sure what it is? When a child shows me something they have built or painted or drawn or in some way made, my response is is something like, “What did you create?” I used to say my ideas - “Oh, is that a ______?” But, I’ve learned children know what they’re doing and they can tell me! When they tell me I usually say, “Wow.” And then I try to point out something in the creation rather than giving praise. For example - I see you made some diagonal lines there, or I see you did some color mixing. This has proven to give them confidence rather than judgment. When one of my littles showed me the whiteboard above I said, “Oh, wow! Can you tell me about that?” And she said, “I drew a big scream!” I love this! And it’s soooo much richer and more creative than anything I could’ve thought!

I’ve purchased caterpillars before to have the littles witness the life cycle. But this year it occurred right in the garden. The littles are incredibly observant and fascinated by nature. I love their sense of wonder.
