High schoolers publish Salmonberry Transcriptomics on bioRxiv!

A group of high schoolers from the greater Seattle area along with their scientist-research mentors, passionate ex-physician and UW-Bothell professor (now at Michigan State Univ) published the gene expression of the pacific northwest native plant Salmonberrry. The students took their summer training in genomics from Coding4Medicine https://hs.coding4medicine.com
Although the crowdfunding, labwork, RNAseq and initial bioinformatic analysis was done end 2018-early 2020, the Covid pandemic interrupted the research. The final analysis and paper drafting was completed mid 2025-early June 2026 and paper was submitted to bioRxiv a week ago!
The data has been submitted to NCBI. This is true democratization of scientific research!

We asked the students to create a high school biology lesson for the AI age, where a biology lesson has embedded computational data and analysis relevant to the bio topic chosen for the lesson.
The high schoolers did a remarkable job-both meticulous and creative!

Dr Craig Venter's shotgun sequencing during the Human Genome Project (2002-3) leap-forwarded the genome sciences/genomics by eons and transformed biology into a large-scale, data-intensive information science. Biological sciences was not ready for it and is still struggling to adapt to the computational mindset en masse! Coding for Medicine seized the opportunity and we went right at the bud-training the next-generation of young scientific minds (high schoolers!) with computational skills in biology!
Dr Venter passed away yesterday April 29. A maverick scientist who never accepted the status quo!

A risk-taking outsider, he brought speed, competition and controversy to one of science’s biggest races.
