Pacific Learning Academy Enhance your transcript & protect your GPA through the power of 1-on-1 accredited courses! All subjects offered for middle and high school level.

Pacific Learning Academy is a state-approved and regionally accredited 1-to-1 school serving students in Sammamish (and the world, online!). We assist in designing and delivering individualized educational programs for each student, whether they are attending public school, private school, or homeschool. A student may take just one class through the Academy, or all classes necessary for a WA state diploma. We provide the core curriculum and electives as outlined by the state, but allow flexibility under individualized educational plans for both gifted and struggling learners to work at their own pace and to earn credits through proven mastery. We offer all-subject tutoring, single courses, dual enrollment, and graduation. Academy instructors meet their students in family homes in Sammamish and Issaquah, at our Sammamish school office, local libraries, and online (live/remote).

Trouble getting started? Sometimes that first step just feels impossible.

Try starting sideways! Or start from the end. There’s no rule that requires us to start at step one. You can answer the easiest question, talk through your ideas, or begin in the middle.

And quit saying “lazy”! That’s almost never the problem. Mistakes and false starts are information, not proof that you can’t do it.

Timing matters.

Drop dates are sometimes within days of starting the semester.

Noticing early that a class isn't working, and doing something about it before the deadline, is its own kind of executive functioning skill.

If a 1:1 credit class is on your radar, the timing question is usually about your student's own school: drop/add windows close fast, and once they do, the options narrow. Reaching out before that date gives you room to actually talk through whether a mastery-based, one-on-one class is the right fit — not just scramble into whatever's left.

Consistency matters just as much as good instruction.

But a lot of executive functioning struggles (planning, organization, task initiation, follow-through) show up long before a grade does. A student can understand the material and still lose points because assignments got started too late, or a project never got broken into steps.

The first month of school is crucial and often the best time to step in, anticipating the problem areas from years past. It's also the best time to get on an instructor's schedule!

But a lot of executive functioning struggles (planning, organization, task initiation, follow-through) show up long before a grade does. A student can understand the material and still lose points because assignments got started too late, or a project never got broken into steps.

Most American high schools begin before 8:30 a.m. But teenagers’ body clocks naturally shift later during adolescence, and for many teens with ADHD, melatonin production begins about 45 minutes later still.

In other words, some students are expected to be learning when their brains are still asking to be asleep.

I didn’t actually know any of this when I opened Pacific Learning Academy 20 years ago. I just knew that students learned better when school could adapt to them. Turns out, there’s science behind that. 😴

“Just get started” can be the hardest part.

Executive functioning affects how a student plans, starts, organizes, and follows through. A student can care about the work, understand what they need to do, and still struggle to begin.

Traditional classrooms don’t always have the time or flexibility to figure out where that process is breaking down.

We are proud to sponsor the Issaquah Schools Foundation's Monster Mash 5K. 🧡

Every registration helps fund programs for students in all 27 Issaquah School District schools. As a school rooted in Sammamish and Issaquah, we're glad to support learners in our own community.

The race is family-friendly and open to all ages and abilities. The route is flat, paved, and out-and-back, so it works whether you want to set a new 5K PR or take a walk with the kids. Festive costumes are encouraged!
