What is the CogAT Verbal Battery?

In this video, we explain what the Verbal Battery measures and how children use verbal reasoning to recognize relationships, make connections, and complete ideas.

Parents will learn about the main types of verbal reasoning questions, including Verbal Classification, Verbal Analogy, and Sentence Completion.

What does the CogAT test actually look like?

Now that you know what CogAT is, let's look at the test format.

The CogAT has a structured format that includes:

📄 Test format — testing may be administered in different formats
❓ Different question types — children encounter different reasoning tasks
📚 Sections/Batteries — Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal reasoning
⏱️ Timing — testing time and question counts can vary by grade and level

One important thing for parents to remember:

CogAT isn't just one type of question.

Children may need to switch between different ways of thinking and different question formats.

That's why becoming familiar with the types of questions and reasoning skills can be helpful before test day.

What exactly is the CogAT?

The CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) is designed to measure how children reason, solve problems, and use different types of thinking.

Rather than focusing only on what a child has learned in school, CogAT looks at different areas of reasoning:

🔹 Verbal reasoning — thinking with words and language
🔹 Quantitative reasoning — thinking with numbers and relationships
🔹 Nonverbal reasoning — thinking with shapes, figures, and visual patterns

Schools may use CogAT results to better understand a child's reasoning abilities and cognitive strengths alongside classroom achievement.

And that's important for parents to understand:

CogAT isn't simply another school test.
