Modernizing education requires a complete overhal of the system we have in place. Much has changed for us as a culture since the 1880s, when our current educational system became prevalent across the US. Despite the leaps and bounds we have made, especially in our development of technology, the structure we utilize to teach our kids has barely shifted. One of the focuses we have as a school is to use the abundance of modern technology to assist out students, allowing them to self-pace their learning and ensure their mastery of the topics they tackle.

How time flies! Today marks the official grand opening of Pathfinders. Our founders have been hard at work all summer preparing us to open, and we couldn't be more thrilled, thankful, and proud of how everything has come together. From the beginning, we have strived to discover a way to both challenge and support our kids in their educational journey. We look forward to traversing the road ahead alongside every member of our learning community and discovering the gifts that they possess. With the right tools and support, we believe every child is capable of heights we can't yet imagine. Thank you for coming along with us as we forge our path forward.

What is self-efficacy, and why does it matter when it comes to education?

Self-efficacy, meaning one's belief in their capacity to finish a task or achieve a goal, is an integral part of all facets of life, but particularly when it comes to education. Children who are secure in the knowledge of their ability to learn new concepts and complete challenging tasks are able to excel and confidently approach their schooling. Being able to maintain that level of belief in themselves despite difficulties they face in learning sets up students to succeed and be more comfortable trying activities outside of their comfort zone. By bringing together a community of learners and giving them the tools they need to increase their sense of confidence, we as educators and parents are able to massively impact and strengthen these necessary sets of beliefs in the children under our care.

With the summer coming to a close, we know the school year is here! Our grand opening is coming on September 18th, and we are both thrilled and excited to get our first year started. From setting out and deciding to change the way we as parents approach educating our kids, to finalizing everything and opening next week, it has been quite a journey for us. We are looking forward to watching the young learners we teach blossom and grow.

The school year is rapidly approaching, and with it all of the excitement and anxieties of getting ourselves and our children ready to begin another year in their journey of education. Supporting and challenging our students to learn, to grow, and to become their best selves is far from an easy task, but with the right people in our corner and tools in our repertoire, it becomes a much more scalable mountain. One of the beliefs we hold very dear at Pathfinders is the idea that every person has a gift that can change the world, in a profound way entirely unique to them. As we move into the school year, it's imperative we help our young learners to find what that means and what that is for them, and encourage them to put their time and energy into cultivating their own talents.

Seeking out purpose is a plight that many humans spend their lives working on, constantly re-evaluating their place and who they choose to be. One of our core beliefs, as both educators and people, is that every person has a gift that can change the world, and that we can be an integral step in our young learners developing a sense of themselves and their own unique purpose for being. Setting up students to succeed in whatever they choose to do, and giving them the tools to understand why and how to adjust when unexpected complications happen, will help us to nurture the next generation of explorers and learners.

What is a growth mindset, and how does it affect education?

Studies have shown that having a growth mindset makes a difference in the effort, motivation, and resilience of students. Believing in one's ability to overcome new challenges and tackle problems that seem out of the scope of existing skills are both key aspects of maintaining a growth mindset. The benefits of self-efficacy and the power of knowing they are capable transforms education from simply a place children go to memorize and meet standards into a platform for them to demonstrate their immense capacity for growth and learning. Students who approach their classes with a fixed idea of themselves and their capabilities have a much harder time adapting to challenges and difficult situations and continuing to put in effort when their initial methods fail. Setting up our learners for success and giving them the tools and support needed to grow and learn as they want to is one of the integral goals we have at Pathfinders.
