We had a fantastic time representing the Franklin Lab and the Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research &Training Institute (CVRTI) at the 2026 Summer Science Day The University of Utah , organizer by the Stark Science Learning Center .Genetics.

Visitors of all ages joined us for "The Science of the Heart: from Research to Real Life", where they toured our lab, learned how scientists study heart disease, and explore anatomy of the real heart!

A special thank you our SURE Summer Research Program students Ray and Niko, who volunteered their time and enthusiasm to help inspire the next generation of scientists.

Events like this remind us how important community engagement is in making science accessible, inspiring curiosity, and connecting research with the people it ultimately serves.

Epigenetic regulation of cardiac physiology and pathophysiology: biological s*x matters 02/13/2026

Excited to share our new “Epigenetic regulation of cardiac physiology and pathophysiology: biological s*x matters” published in Journal of Cardiovascular Aging.

In collaboration with Boudina Lab , Garrido Lab at CSIC– , and Cobo Lab , we highlight how s*x-specific epigenetic mechanisms -including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs- shape cardiac development, aging, and cardiovascular disease.

The take-home message: precision cardiovascular medicine must account for biological s*x.

Special kudos to Omid Rouzbehani, who spearheaded the idea and led us through the entire process- great leadership and perseverance.

We were honored to host our hands-on workshop, 'The Science of the Heart: From Research to Real Life,' where high school students explored heart science and current research, including heart dissections ❤️🤓‼️

We investigated the expression and abundance of a specific mark (H4K20me2) and its enzymes across different models of cardiac dysfunction. While global levels didn’t change, we identified several key enzymes that do shift in both mouse models and human tissue.

A small but meaningful step toward understanding how epigenetics shapes .

Proteomic Characterization of Cardioprotective Human Acellular Amniotic Fluid 03/06/2025

A result of the fantastic collaboration between Franklin and Selzman labs at CVRTI. The publication describes the first mass-spectrometry based characterization of human acellular amniotic fluid that is cardioprotective against ischemia-reperfusion.
