Congratulations to Schola Matovu, PhD, RN, on the launch of The Grand Experience Podcast, a new project that gives voice to grandparent caregivers and kinship families across Utah.

"Our goal is not simply to tell stories, but to create meaningful pathways to awareness, connection, and action," said Matovu. "By bringing together caregivers, service providers, researchers, and community partners, we hope to ensure that grandfamilies are not only heard, but are also equipped with the tools, resources, and support necessary to flourish."

Matovu's project, developed in partnership with the Children's Service Society of Utah GRANDfamilies Program, exemplifies the impact of community-engaged scholarship, bringing the voices and stories of grandfamilies to life. The podcast debuted at a premiere on August 29 at Megaplex Theatres in Sandy and launched to the public on September 1.

Congratulations to Cathy Maxwell, PhD, RN, FAAN, for being selected as a 2026 Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA)!

GSA, the nation's oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization focused on aging, named 50 exemplary professionals to its 2026 class of Fellows. Fellow status is peer recognition for outstanding contributions to the field of gerontology and represents the highest category of GSA membership, awarded for a range of activities including research, teaching, administration, public service, practice, and notable participation in the Society. Maxwell was selected as part of GSA's Social Research, Policy, and Practice Section.

Maxwell will be formally recognized during GSA's 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting, held November 4 to 7 in National Harbor, MD.

On Monday, we welcomed new cohorts of students across our Bachelor's, Master's, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and PhD programs. We also expanded opportunities for advanced pediatric nursing education this fall with the launch of two new Doctor of Nursing Practice emphases: Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Dual Acute Care/Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. In addition, we are introducing a Graduate Certificate in Acute Care Pediatric Nursing through our Post-Graduate Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certificate Program.

These additions bring us to 11 distinct DNP specialty emphases and reaffirm our place as the only institution in Utah and the surrounding region preparing nurse practitioners to care for children with acute, critical, and complex health conditions.

The University of Utah College of Nursing community remembers Linda Amos, PhD, RN, FAAN—longtime Dean of the College of Nursing, inaugural holder of the Ida May "Dotty" RN & D. Keith Barnes, MD Presidential Endowed Chair, and Associate Vice President for Health Sciences—who died Aug. 9 at her home in Texas at age 85.

"Linda Amos was a transformational leader whose influence can be seen in every corner of our college and throughout the nursing profession," said Marla De Jong, PhD, RN, CCNS, FAAN, Dean of the College of Nursing. "She cherished nursing students and coupled bold vision with relentless determination, advancing nursing education, shaping national standards, and creating opportunities for countless future leaders."

Congratulations to the newest graduates of the College of Nursing!

At our 2026 Summer Convocation Ceremony, 100 graduates were recognized, including 61 pre-licensure and 39 RN-BS students. After receiving the College’s traditional nursing pin, a symbol of both nursing heritage and Utah pride, graduates officially entered the profession by turning their tassels from right to left.

We are proud to welcome these new nurses as they begin making a difference in communities across Utah and beyond.
