Congratulations, engineers! We were privileged to kick off graduation day with our third annual Graduation Celebration before the University of Utah, John and Marcia Price College of Engineering convocation—and it was one to remember. Graduates enjoyed a catered lunch, connected with classmates, faculty, and family, and picked up their graduation gifts: 32 oz YETI Ramblers featuring the CvEEN Department logo on one side and the UofU logo on the other—they’re always a huge hit! 🥤

We’re thrilled to send nearly 80 talented new engineers out into the world. Congratulations to the Class of 2026—we can’t wait to see what you do next.

Huge congrats to Benjamin Kadunic for passing the FE exam—and for graduating in just a few weeks with a degree in civil engineering from The University of Utah! After walking at graduation, he’ll be continuing at the U to pursue a master’s degree in Structural Engineering.

Benjamin passed the very challenging FE exam at just 19 and is graduating at 20—an impressive milestone early in his engineering career.

“One of my favorite memories from the program was crushing our concrete samples in the materials lab.”

Congrats, Benjamin 👏

Taking transportation engineering to the track! Our student chapter of The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) recently hosted a road safety outreach event at Utah Motorsports Campus, working with high school students in a go-karting program to talk about defensive driving, distracted driving, and real-world road conditions.

Our ITE student chapter is incredibly committed to community engagement and education. By bringing engineering concepts into accessible, real-world settings, the group is helping prepare the next generation of safer, more informed drivers.

Tuesday night, our Distinguished Structural Engineering Seminar with Ron Klemencic of brought together a highly collaborative and engaged engineering community.

We were proud to host a full room of students, faculty, industry professionals, and colleagues from neighboring institutions — including four professors from Utah State University and one from Utah Valley University. The strong turnout and cross-disciplinary participation created an environment for meaningful discussion and connection across academia and industry.

Thank you to and SEAU for hosting this successful event with us!

The next distinguished engineer we're bringing to campus is Dr. Mary MacLaughlin, a Goldcorp Professor & Head of Civil Engineering at Montana tech. Learn more: https://www.civil.utah.edu/seminar/

Now featured in ASCE Utah! 📣 Environmental engineering student Helen Salako’s research supports innovative ways to improve soil health and advance sustainable agriculture—and it was just featured in the March edition of .asce's newsletter.

Her work explores how biosolids—treated organic materials from wastewater—can be repurposed to improve soil health, increase organic matter, and support sustainable agriculture in Utah’s semi-arid climate. By reframing biosolids as a resource rather than waste, her research offers practical solutions to challenges like soil degradation, water limitations, and rising fertilizer costs, while also helping communities manage wastewater more sustainably.

In addition to her research, Helen is passionate about science communication and outreach, sharing her work through programs like STEM Ambassadors and broader community engagement.

“I love to communicate science. I love telling people about what I do,” she says.
