Our JMS Buff team, consisting recently competed in the national Battle of the Books competition, where they advanced to the semifinal round and ultimately placed 3rd overall. Battle of the Books is a national academic competition where Deaf and hard of hearing students read a set list of books and compete in teams to answer detailed questions about the texts. Teams are expected to demonstrate strong comprehension, collaboration, and quick recall as they progress through multiple rounds of structured, quiz-style matches. In addition to their strong performance, the team was honored with the Sportsmanship Award, which Roberta Cordano, president of Gallaudet University, described as the most important award in the competition. Malika Grossinger was also recognized individually with an All-Star Award for her outstanding efforts. Beyond the competition, our students enjoyed nightly activities that gave them valuable opportunities to connect and socialize with Deaf students from schools across the country. Congratulations to our Buff team. We are proud of you for representing JMS!

We are pleased to celebrate the accomplishments of several of our JMS students who recently competed in the National Literacy Competition hosted by Gallaudet University.
This national competition brings together Deaf and hard-of-hearing students from across the country to showcase their talents in creative writing and poetry. Students submit original works that are evaluated by judges using rigorous criteria focused on voice, clarity, structure, creativity, and language development. Being recognized in this competition is a significant honor, as it reflects both strong literacy skills and the ability to express ideas with depth and originality within a national pool of peers.
We are especially proud to share that two JMS students earned the top awards in Creative Writing: Malika Grossinger received 1st place, Meilly Saravia received 2nd place, and Lucy Dietz received an Honorable Mention. In addition, Malika was awarded 2nd place in Poetry, and Lucy received an Honorable Mention in Poetry at the middle school level.
These recognitions reflect not only individual talent and dedication, but also the strength of the literacy instruction and language-rich environment we strive to provide at JMS. We could not be prouder of these students for representing our school with excellence on a national stage.

The preschool classes went grocery shopping at Harmon’s. We learned about different types of foods, where to find the foods and how to pay for our food. Next week we will make some delicious snacks with the food we bought.

Jill and McKenzie’s preschool class has been having a very fun Fall. We are learning about cooking and restaurants. The students love playing chef while using kitchen vocabulary. They’re also getting great practice with following simple directions while learning to follow a recipe. We are ready for a Thanksgiving feast!

Our JMS first graders had a fun week celebrating Red Ribbon Week. We learned about self respect and making good choices. We choose not to do drugs because they are not safe! We promise to be respectful to ourselves, responsible, and safe! In Art class, we learned how to create a giant poster of a red ribbon by putting four painted papers together. For each day, we got to dress up! Our picture below is from Crazy Hair/Hat Day.
