Diagnosis. Prescription. Referral. Next patient. That's often all the current system allows a provider to offer, and it's not because they don't care, it's because insurance and Medicare regulations don't leave room for the whole story. Nurses are trained differently. They're trained to see the whole person, which is exactly why so many make natural functional medicine providers. Sometimes the missing piece in healthcare isn't more tests, it's more time and a different lens. đź§

The moments that stick with a nurse most aren't always the ones where the patient does exactly what's recommended. Sometimes the real reward comes from getting curious instead of judgmental, meeting someone exactly where they are, and asking what support looks like right now, not what the textbook says it should look like. Presence over protocol. That's the kind of care that actually resonates. 🤍

Ever actually read the ingredient list on your prescriptions? One nurse did, and what she found in a vaginal estrogen script stopped her in her tracks. Sulfates, known hormone disruptors, and chemicals linked to cancer, all in som**hing meant to go in your body. Estrogen therapy can be protective, but that doesn't mean everything it comes packaged with deserves a pass. This one's a wake up call to read the fine print. đź‘€

Meet Jennifer!

Jennifer is an RN and board-certified functional nurse coach, helping perimenopausal and menopausal women discover and address the root causes of chronic and autoimmune symptoms.

Her journey into holistic health began with her own struggles. Long-term antibiotic use as a child triggered an autoimmune disease, bringing years of difficult and embarrassing symptoms. In her early 30s, she became very ill with a severe flare. Conventional doctors recommended expensive, immune-suppressing drugs with significant risks. But suppressing her immune system didn’t feel like the right solution—she wanted to heal.

With the guidance of a holistic practitioner, she focused on healing her gut and reducing her toxic burden. The results were life-changing, and for the past 20 years, she has kept her symptoms well controlled.

Throughout her nursing career, she worked with thousands of patients suffering from chronic and autoimmune conditions. She became increasingly frustrated working within a system that offers very little education or support for true healing. Often, she met these patients at the end of their lives in her work as a hospice nurse.

After several years of dealing with her own grief and personal loss, she decided in 2023 to step away from conventional medicine. First, she began training as a functional nurse and then as a nurse coach. She now owns a virtual private practice, coaching women one-on-one. She loves helping her clients live their best lives!

She lives in Cu***ng, Georgia, with her husband of 32 years. They are the parents of three grown children and grandparents of two young grandsons. Nothing brings her more joy than spending time with her family and making memories. She loves being outdoors—camping, hiking, and kayaking rivers.

"It was like she gave me permission to be happy now." 🤍

A lot of us are waiting for permission that nobody is ever going to hand us. Permission to rest. To stop earning it. To be okay before everything is resolved.

Sometimes it arrives from somewhere unexpected. Sometimes from a much younger version of yourself who never needed you to have it all figured out.

"I've actually had acupuncture for PTSD."

Sometimes the most useful thing a clinician can hear isn't a study. It's another person describing what som**hing actually felt like in their body.

This one's that. 🤍

Being an option giver starts with knowing what exists, and staying open to experiences that don't fit neatly into what we were trained on.

The woman who helped bring acupuncture into American healthcare policy was a nurse. 🤍

Dr. Effie Chow, RN. She founded the East West Academy of Healing Arts in 1973, became a licensed acupuncturist in 1977, and was later appointed to the original White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy.

All of it at a time when people looked at what she was doing and asked, "what is this?"

Every option you're able to offer a patient today exists because someone before you was willing to be the one asked that question.
