University of Utah Trumpet Studio

The University of Utah Trumpet Ensemble performed at the 50th annual International Trumpet Guild (Official) Conference taking place at the historic Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.

They performed a prelude concert to one of the many sessions and clinics offered throughout the week. Their performance of “Intrada Dramatica” by Joe Price was a thrilling and exciting contribution to conference’s spectacular lineup of performers and special topics.

They truly threw it down and showed what the Utes Trumpets bring to the table!

The “Crimson Brass,” our graduate trumpet ensemble, competed in the International Trumpet Guild’s Chamber Competition at the Eastman School of Music as part of the 50th ITG Conference. The Crimson Brass were among a handful of groups selected to compete at this year’s competition over hundreds of entries.

They performed Tony Plog’s “Contrasts” which was co-commissioned by Dr.Shelton and the Eastman Trumpet Ensemble while he was there back in 2015 and taken to the National Trumpet Competition that same year.

We are so thrilled to see our student colleagues out here killing it on an international stage at such a prestigious and historic event.

The Crimson Brass, the Utes Trumpet Studio’s graduate trumpet ensemble, are hard at work preparing for their competition performance at the Conference at the end of the month at the .school in Rochester, NY.

We are having many of our instrumental and ensemble faculty, along with trumpet guests from , work with our students in coaching sessions. We are trying to get as many ears and perspectives outside our studio as we can before 5/26. Today we enlisted the ears of our Director of Bands, Dr. Jason Missal.

Our final recital of the academic year featured Josh McMurray (BM ’26). Josh will complete their final degree requirement through student teaching this fall and is set to graduate in December. Congratulations on reaching this milestone!

The wind ensemble trumpets just finished their last concert of the year! What a fun year of great music and make sure to catch us playing at commencement at the end of this month!!

Ann Gray (MM’27) performed an amazing degree recital on Saturday! She performed works by Handel, Morales, de Falla, and Plog.

Ann’s recital was the fourth (!) recital in the last week from our studio. We have two more recitals to finish out the year. Kris Gilmore (DMA’27) will perform a chamber recital on April 10th and Josh McMurray (BM’26) will perform his senior recital on April 16.

The Condie Undergraduate Brass Quintet played a thrilling recital on Friday night. Trumpet players Sarah Mark (BM’28) and Eleanor Cornish (BS/BA’27) played beautifully on repertoire by Cheetham, Puinno, Aleotti (arr. Paradis), Kamen, Esmail, Irvine, McKee, and a composition by Condie trombone player Jackson März.

Morgan Staker (BM’27) performed a marvelous joint recital with Eric Pearson from the studio. She performed works by Castérède, Arutunian, Bernstein, Ewazen, and an arrangement by Eric Curry.

Another wonderful recital in the books!

Jaden Jones (MM’27) played a beautiful recital this past Tuesday. He performed works by Turrin, Arutunian, Kay, Cotten, and Raum. Jaden’s recital was the first of 4 (!) recitals our studio performed in this week.
