Founded in 1973, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan was the first contemporary dance company in the Chinese-speaking world. The company takes its name from the oldest known Chinese dance and seeks to combine traditional training with modern movement styles. Its dancers are well-versed in Qi Gong and meditation, as well as ballet and street dance. They have performed on stages around the globe and were recognized by The Times as “Asia’s leading contemporary dance theater.”

The evening features Blue Hour / Beckoning: A Double Bill. Derived from the French phrase l'heure bleue, Blue Hour is inspired by a vision of the hazy blue sky glimpsed in the predawn darkness of New York. Beckoning draws from the Taiwanese street-dancing ritual of the Eight Infernal Generals (Ba Jia Jiang), creating a mysterious zigzag of body language that gives this abstract work a playful yet poetic quality.

Led by the imaginative choreographer Hervé Koubi, Compagnie Hervé Koubi brings the mesmerizingly kinetic Sol Invictus to Salt Lake City for the first time. Named after the “invincible sun” deity of Ancient Rome, the work is a gravity-defying fusion of contemporary movement, capoeira, and urban dance that transforms the stage into a playground for possibilities.

Hervé Koubi, a former contemporary dancer with leading European choreographers, founded his company in 2000 to explore how movement connects cultures across generations. Influenced by a transformative return to his Algerian roots and a deep engagement with urban dance, his work blends contemporary, street, and traditional forms into a powerful, unifying style. In collaboration with dancer and choreographer Fayçal Hamlat, Koubi continues to redefine 21st-century ballet as an inclusive, boundary-crossing practice grounded in both heritage and innovation.

Compagnie Hervé Koubi is an internationally acclaimed dance company that has toured extensively across Europe, North America, and major global stages to sell-out audiences.

Now celebrating its 80th anniversary, the Limón Dance Company has been at the forefront of dance innovation since its formation in 1946. It was the first modern dance company to perform at New York’s Lincoln Center and has performed at The White House twice. Pairing new choreography by brilliant contemporary artists with revivals of José Limón’s groundbreaking works keeps their rich history connected to the present day. Their theatricality, connection to rhythm, and precise imagery, along with their dedication to cultural partnerships and commissioning new works, makes Limón one of the most influential voices in American dance today.

At UtahPresents, the Limón Dance Company will perform Mazurkas, a work of exuberant and musical dancing. Following a visit to Poland after WWII, Limón created Mazurkas to celebrate the vitality of the Polish people with music by Polish composer Frédéric Chopin. The evening will also feature Join, choreographed by Aszure Barton in collaboration with Grammy-nominated composer Ambrose Akinmusire. Join takes Limón's vivid, poetic description of a lost Doris Humphrey work to create a new world of spellbinding movement and transcendent storytelling. Students from University of Utah’s School of Dance will open the program.
