Meet student researcher Jack Cicero. His research explores how to create an analog of an electric diode—but for spin currents rather than electric currents.

Using principles of spintronics, a field that takes advantage of the intrinsic “spin” of electrons, Jack is investigating new ways to control how information and energy move through materials. 🔬

It’s fundamental physics with exciting possibilities for the future of electronics and computing.

🌌 Student research is taking us all the way to the stars.

Meet Evan Kerr, a Physics and Astronomy major at the University of Utah. His research focuses on the discovery of a stellar-mass black hole in Omega Centauri, one of the largest and most massive star clusters in the Milky Way. 🔭🕳️

By studying objects like this hidden black hole, researchers can learn more about how black holes form, evolve and interact with the stars around them.

Not a bad day at the office when your research involves finding a black hole. ✨

Meet Priyam Patel, professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Utah. Her research focuses on geometry and topology—fields of mathematics that explore the shapes of spaces, their structures and the symmetries within them.

🧊➕📐 What can mathematics tell us about sea ice? A lot, it turns out.

Ken Golden, Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Utah, studies composite materials—particularly sea ice, or frozen seawater.

When seawater freezes, salt can’t fit into the ice crystals. Instead, it becomes concentrated in tiny, sub-millimeter pockets of brine throughout the ice. Golden and his team use mathematical models to understand how these complex structures behave—from the flow of fluids and heat through the ice to the biological systems living within it.

By predicting the overall properties of sea ice, mathematics can help us better understand one of the most dynamic materials in Earth’s polar environments. 🌊❄️
