Hot off the press! Excited that our Acute and Cardiopulm 21-22 residents were able to be a part of the research and dissemination process for this project. We love getting residents involved in research and supporting them in their own research endeavors as well.
Do you do inspiratory muscle training with your patients? Why or why not? In my opinion, it’s a very underutilized intervention that would be simple for implementing in practice across the spectrum.
Check out our recent publication through Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy “published online first” section and look for it in the next print publication!

Our program director, Haley Bento, recently was hired on as a full-time faculty member teaching entry-level DPT students within our Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training. While still directing our residency programs, it has been wonderful to have even more of a bridge between teaching, residency-training, and clinical practice. Haley hopes to build up the existing acute care and cardiovascular and pulmonary content to even better prepare students to pursue these specialty areas.

Our resident, Chandler, has wasted no time leaning into opportunities to foster his exercise testing knowledge and interest in research in this area. This morning, he designed and performed a sub-max exercise test on a patient who survived a stroke in order to help direct his plan of care. This patient has been participating in high-intensity gait training protocols with his Physical Therapists with goals for reaching certain heart rate zones. Results of this sub max test will help further define those protocol parameters and personalize the intervention to hopefully elicit even better results from this training.
This is a fun project that Chandler is getting involved in and we are excited to support his interest in this and see where it takes him!

And we officially kicked off another year of our University of Utah Residency programs this week!
Big welcome to Jason Tolman (Acute Care), Chandler McDonald (Cardiopulm), Leah Ling (neuro), and Kevin Maxwell (neuro) who will all be with us through next July completing their residency programs.
We wish all our residents “happy learning” and can’t wait to see how much you all grow as clinicians this year.

When reviewing all of the accomplishments of a residency year, it’s amazing to look back at the hours dedicated to learning and self-development.
Our first resident, completed
175 hours of 1:1 mentoring
56 hours of involvement with research within our specialty area
163 hours of in-person teaching and professional development
68 hours of service and advocacy within our specialty area
And 4 days of ski lessons!
If you’re wondering what goes into a residency year, this is it. In addition to seeing patients in 5 different cardiopulmonary specific settings for an entire year.
Wow, that’s some hard work!
