Take a moment to say THANK YOU!

Rarely, if ever, does anyone achieve something without the help of another person. Finding the career path that “flips a switch in your brain” or makes you excited to go to work each day is a tremendous blessing. I’ll bet everyone can pinpoint at least one person they credit with helping them along the road to their career. I am no exception.

I was a few years into my college experience and was nervous to pull the trigger and commit to a major. Picking a college major meant a 30+ year commitment to a path where I didn’t know what the end destination would be. At this point I had switched majors half a dozen times without ever feeling like I could charge ahead and tackle a career. For this reason I was getting ready to pick a safe, perhaps meaningless major, that would get me a degree, and I could figure out what to do with it after that. One day I was talking with a friend about my dilemma, venting my frustrations, and asked “What is your major, and what do you plan to do with it?” He proceeded to enthusiastically tell me all about his plan to be an educator with a major in secondary education. Any question I presented to him he had an answer for. Salary, additional training, work life balance, supporting a family; he explained how it could all be possible. The switch was flipped! I could finally envision myself in a career and how it would pan out for the future I wanted! I owe a tremendous thanks to my friend David Tanner for being my guide when I needed it most.

I think Math is THE MOST VALUABLE subject in school!

I WISH someone had told me how easy it would be to get a KILLER job with a degree in Math! There are so many industries that value the skills Math provides. Not to mention, the unchanging facts of you can either do Math or you can’t. There is no variation like with other subjects. That for me is awesome! It’s a shame that so many young people have a bad early experience with Math which turns them from the subject.

When the pandemic forced teachers and students to separate, I became very aware of how much I enjoy interacting with students.

I think there are a lot of perks to being a teacher, but the day to day variety that comes with being around young people has to be my favorite. I can be having a rough day and once the students come through the door it makes me come alive. I honestly feel blessed to have found a career that I find so invigorating and hope I can help others do the same.

I think it is amazing that Dano TAUGHT HIMSELF how to code and become a Software Engineer! It’s a testament to the fact that you really can do anything you want to today thanks to all the great resources online and in books. If I were to do things over again, I would copy Dano’s actions. Learn a profession through study and real life application.
