As the SLCSD Board of Education approves cutting social workers, McKinney-Vento, and other direct services to students, I thought that I would remind everyone of the increase in administrative personnel at the district office, the creation of new administrative positions, and promotions to existing administrators. Is this prioritizing students' needs? Is this good stewardship of your tax dollars?

The Utah School Boards Association provides information regarding effective school boards. Effective school boards = effective school districts that lead to student success.

"The School Board makes decisions that determine how children are educated and tax dollars are spent."

"Effective school board meetings are crucial for several reasons:
● Decision Making: School board meetings are where important decisions are made regarding policies, budget allocations, curriculum changes, personnel matters, and other critical aspects that impact the school and its stakeholders. Effective meetings ensure that decisions are well-informed, transparent, and beneficial to the school community.
● Accountability and Oversight: Board meetings provide a platform for overseeing the school's operations, ensuring that policies and procedures are followed, and resources are allocated appropriately. Effective meetings facilitate discussions that hold administrators accountable for their actions and decisions.
● Community Engagement and Transparency: These meetings offer opportunities for community members, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders to engage with the school board, express concerns, offer suggestions, and gain insight into the decision-making processes. Transparency in meetings fosters trust and confidence in the school’s leadership."

Are the proposed/approved budgets benifitting students? I think not.

To date:
-The G-5 Administrator position was created to address school closures. This responsibility previously fell upon the Associate/Assistant Superintendent.

-Two Administrators on Special Assignment have been added with no clear understanding of what their roles and responsibilities are and how they differ from Area Directors.

-The Athletics Activities Supervisor is a new administrative assignment.

-The Teaching and Learning Division promoted all of their district-based administrators. They also have a team of 33 full time academic coaches at the district office.

-The Policy and Legal Services Division did not exist prior to Superintendent McKell Withers' tenure. Legal matters were addressed through contract services with a law firm approved by the SLCSD Board of Education.

-Salaries for the Superintendent and Business Administrator are well above $350,000/year.

-Salaries for the General Counsel and Executive Leadership are well above $250,000/year.

-Salaries for district-level administrators range between $180,000-$200,000/year.

SLC School Board elections in November provide you with an opportunity to make a change and set SLCSD on a course that benefits students and honors you (parent and taxpayers).
