What’s summer without a little singing? 🎶 We recently returned from choir camp, where 106 kids, 19 chaperones, and 5 staff members gathered for a week in Logan, Utah. 🏔️ Students started preparing music for the upcoming school year, as well as for our winter performance tour to Italy! Along with all of that hard work, choristers also created new friendships and made memories with their classmates! ❤️💛

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the tragic death of Dale Schultz, a beloved alumni parent, gifted artist, and member of our extended Choir School family. Dale and his wife, Reinette, were among those involved in the Twin Falls, Idaho, shooting. While we mourn the loss of Dale, we continue to pray for Reinette, who remains hospitalized as she recovers from her injuries.

During this difficult time, we invite our school community to continue to pray for the Schultz family as they traverse this horrific loss and injury. The St. Olaf’s parish community will be hosting a Rosary on Tuesday, August 4, at 5:00 p.m. at St. Olaf’s church, 315 E 1800 S, Bountiful. You are also warmly invited to a 6:00 p.m. Rosary for the Schultz family immediately following the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Thursday, August 6, at the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Please continue to keep the Schultz family, their loved ones, and all those affected by this tragedy in your prayers. —Gregory Glenn, Pastoral Administrator

Today is the Solemnity of St. Mary Magdalene, the day on which the entire church remembers our great patroness of The Madeleine Choir School and The Cathedral of the Madeleine.

She was not some mythic creature, floating luminously in an eternal transcendent state, but rather a flesh and blood human being who knew all of the sorrows, joys, frustrations and weakness that we experience. Three items of note stand out about her.

Firstly, she was a faithful disciple of Jesus of Nazareth. She travelled with him for a better part of his three-year ministry in Galilee and Judea learning the core behaviors of his teachings: to love, to forgive, to be merciful, to give, and not to judge.

Secondly, she was loyal to the end, staying with Jesus through the horrifically painful and humiliating suffering on the cross. Most of the disciples abandoned him – she was present through his painful death.

Finally, Mary Magdalene was given the ‘Paschal Privilege’, the first human being to encounter Jesus risen from the dead, acting then on his invitation to “go and tell” the other disciples of the resurrection.

We are the People of St. Mary Magdalene, and we are struggling today with injustice, economic worries, incivility, an indifference to care for those in need, and the stark realization of troubling mindsets deeply ingrained in our nation’s core. On this great feast day, let us ask her prayers that we might live the behaviors Jesus taught and modeled for her, that we might be loyal companions with all who struggle or suffer, and that we might be people of hope, finally acknowledging the saving power and love of God who raised Jesus from the dead.

St. Mary Magdalene, Apostle to the apostles, pray for us.
