If you've seen enough of the Folk Festival, or simply want to see the best film of 2018 on the big screen introduced by Elsie Walker, come and see our first film of the fall, Cold War, on Sunday at 2:30 in the Fulton Hall Film Center at SU.
With a brilliantly stark visual aesthetic to match its lean narrative, Cold War is a passionate love story between a man and a woman who meet in the ruins of post-war Poland. Of vastly different backgrounds and temperaments, they are fatefully mismatched and yet condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in 1950s Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, it's the tale of a couple separated by politics, character flaws and unfortunate twists of fate. This impossible love story set in impossible times was nominated for three Oscars and won five European Film Awards.

Our Fall season starts on September 10 with one of the delights of last year, Captain Fantastic. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, a father (Viggo Mortensen) devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and enter the world, beginning a journey that challenges his idea of what it means to be a parent in this affecting and hilarious meditation on our divided and divisive times. Mortensen was Oscar-nominated for a performance that Rolling Stone called “magnificent… He gets under the skin of this loving father who must grapple with the possibility that his arrogant, free spirit might actually do harm to his children.”

On November 5 we screen Neruda by acclaimed Chilean director Pablo Larrain. Beloved poet Neruda was the most famous communist in post-WWII Chile. In this story of a persecuted poet and his obsessive adversary, Neruda recognizes his own heroic possibilities: a chance to become a symbol for liberty, as well as a literary legend. Praising the film in the New Yorker, Anthony Lane observed that Neruda “reminds us that movies, by their very nature, owe far more to poetry than they ever will to the novel.”

Our December 3rd screening, I Am Not Your Negro, is Raoul Peck's Oscar-nominated documentary. It is a is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using James Baldwin’s original words and rich archival material, and “one of the best movies you’re likely to see this year.” (New York Times)
