Salisbury Junior Cotillion Since 1991, Salisbury Junior Cotillion has provided a premier social education program. co.til.lion \k-o/til/yen \ also co.til.lon \k-o/til/yen, k. OF, fr.

o/t-e/ (y)-on\ n [F cotillion, Lit., petticoat, fr. cote coat] 1: a ballroom dance for couples that resembles the quadrille 2: an elaborate dance with frequent changing of partners carried out under the leadership of one couple at formal balls 3: To assemble a group of young people to develop, appreciate and respect their role in society through dance and social etiquette education. There are seve

ral definitions for the term cotillion, but for hundreds of young people in the Salisbury area, cotillion has a very special meaning. Once a year, students of all ages meet to develop better communication, better socialization and dance skills that will have a positive impact throughout their lifetimes. Salisbury Junior Cotillion is more than just a dance class. It is also a social education program, where students learn the art of social dance and "survival" etiquette. From the traditional elegance of American and Latin dances to the electrifying beat of the latest contemporary variations, Salisbury Junior Cotillion offers a fun program. The various dances span a diverse range of cultures and generations that can be easily interpreted to almost any dance or music situation. Beginning material includes: Traditional - Foxtrot, Latin Cha-cha, AmericanTango, and Jitterbug Swing. Subject matter that constitutes part of the etiquette program includes:
1 The Purpose of Manners,
2 Common Courtesy and Respect for Others,
3 How To Introduce Yourself and Others; Receiving Line Etiquette
4 The Art of Conversation,
5 First Impressions,
6 Elementary Table Manners. Dress code is as follows: boys – dress shirt, tie and jacket, no jeans, no tennis shoes; girls - dress or skirt, no sandals or sneakers, no revealing tops or bare midriffs. Sandals are extremely difficult to dance in; ballet slipper-type shoes are fashionable and comfortable. The linoleum floor is a bit slippery so high heels aren’t a good idea either.

If you haven’t sent in your RSVP, I need it by Monday January 5 so that I can finalize my meeting with the caterer. Venmo is available as well as checks. I only recommend paying ahead of time so that you don’t have to wait in a long line at the door. We have two check in tables, one for those of you who paid ahead of time and those who still need to pay. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me by email: [email protected]. Our Venmo is -Ward-107.

This was an unusually large class this year, so it was challenging to get around and help each student individually. But the students worked hard and really learned a lot. Here they are working on boxstep. By the end of the class they could carry on a conversation while they were dancing. That means they really were comfortable on the dance floor

This was a wonderful group of students who have all moved on and are in college now. Nothing but happy memories. So many have come back to me over the years and told me what a beneficial experience Cotillion was for them.

I will be communicating with the students and families of the Cotillion class over the next few days. We are watching this developing snow system that’s headed our way. I’ve already made an alternate date for Saturday Jan. 18 in case the roads are just too difficult. By Friday afternoon, we’ll have a clearer picture of what Saturday looks like. Don’t hesitate to email me or text if you have questions. [email protected]
