A huge thank you to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks! 🦅

On Tuesday and Wednesday, UMES Hawks student-athletes and staff welcomed our students back to school with energy, enthusiasm, and encouragement. Their presence was truly inspiring and motivational, setting such a positive tone for the start of the new school year. The vibe was amazing, and we are so grateful for the time, smiles, high-fives, and positive energy they shared with our students!

The next monthly meeting of the Wicomico County Board of Education is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2026, in the Board of Education Auditorium at 101 Long Ave., Salisbury.

For this Board meeting, the Board will convene at 6:30 p.m. and immediately vote to go into closed session. The open portion of the meeting will begin at about 7 p.m. The agenda for this meeting is available at https://wicomico-schools.community.highbond.com/Portal/

To register for public comments, please visit the pre-registration page (https://board_public_comments.wicomicoschools.org/), which is open from Sept. 1 - 7. Anyone unable to pre-register online may visit the school system office at 2424 Northgate Drive during business hours to fill out a paper copy of the pre-registration form.

This meeting will be livestreamed on the Watch Board Meetings page of the school system's website - www.wicomicoschools.org

We're excited to see our students for the start of the 2026-2027 school year this week! Tuesday, Sept. 1 is the first day for students in grades 1-6 and 9 (Grade 6 only at Mardela, all grades attend at Pittsville). Then on Wednesday, Sept. 2, all students in grades 1-12 will be in school. Our Prekindergarten and Kindergarten students report as assigned by the school during the first week.

Our fantastic back to school week continued with our construction theme and a Data Dig on Friday! We discussed where are currently with celebrations in our data as well as areas to focus on for improvement.

State Celebrations
- Overall English Language Arts proficiency, for grades 6 - 8 combined, increased by 4.4%
- The greatest ELA growth amount all students was in 7th grade

- Overall Math proficiency, for grades 6 - 8 combined, increased by 3.4%
- The greatest Math growth among all students was in Algebra 1. They went from 16% to 42%

- Grade 8 Science increased 4.7%

- Grade 8 Social Studies increased 2.5%

We then looked at MCAP spring performance by standard and set goals for our first Common Formative Assessments for our Professional Learning Communities. All staff participated as we all have a part in moving our school forward!

We then enjoyed a delicious lunch thanks to an anonymous community donation.

Our back to school staff week was busy with instructional professional development and a focus on our work ahead.

On Thursday, staff was able to participate in various content PD around Disciplinary Literacy, Building Thinking Classrooms, and how to use AI appropriately in education.

Teachers also participated in various breakout sessions centered around Mathematical Thinking, Building Historical Thinking Skills, Engineering Better Scientific Outcomes, Maximizing Warrior TIME and Differentiated Instruction, Building Strong Learning with Imagine Learning, Repaving the Way with Classroom Management, Transforming Social and Emotional Behaviors of Students, Understanding the Infrastructure of the Science of Reading, Bringing the Crew together with Co-Teaching, Improving our Understanding with Cultural Bias Training, Supporting Communication with TalkingPoints, and Breaking Ground on Instructional Practices with National Board Certification Interest.

Families with students in grades 7 - 12 are invited to attend the College & Career Training Fair sponsored by Wicomico County Public Schools on Tuesday, September 22 at James M. Bennett High School (300 East College Avenue; Salisbury, MD 21804) from 6:00 -7:30 p.m. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to help plan for your future.
At this event, you can discover information about:
