The best way to prevent tick bites is to do daily tick checks when you come in from outside activities. In New England, the most common types of ticks are dog ticks and black legged (deer) ticks. We also have winter ticks, also known as moose ticks since they attach to moose. We are starting to see a few lone star ticks, which are more common down south. Check your body, feel for bumps, and doublecheck those freckles! Send us any ticks you find.

- Fever
- Chills
- Headaches
- Muscle aches
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- This all leads to a weakened immune response

Pathogenesis:
A. phagocytophilum infect neutrophils and has variant surface proteins that also help it escape from your immune response.

1. Borrelia burgdorferi
2. Borrelia mayonii
3. Borrelia afzelii
4. Borrelia garinii

Transmission:
- Blacklegged tick bite (Ixodes scapularis, Ixodes pacificus and Ixodes ricinus)
- Can cross the placenta during pregnancy

- Flu-like symptoms
- Fever
- Chills
- Leading to late-onset disease: arthritis, muscle aches, brain fog, facial palsies

It can hide from the immune response by changing it’s “skin” and going to places that immune system isn’t as strong like bones, muscles, and brain tissues. Later onset infection, B. burgdorferi will change its shape and become a biofilm.

Treatment:
Early on-set disease is treated with doxycycline, amoxicillin, cefuroxime axetil

Five Ways to Create Tick-Safe Landscape
1. Keep lawn mowed.
2. Keep ferns because they have a natural pesticide.
3. Rakes leaves because ticks lay eggs in leaf litter.
4. Put tick tubes in wood piles and stonewalls where there are small rodents for ticks to feed on.
5. Make a perimeter with wood chips or use a spray (bifenthrin) to protect tick-safe zone. But sprays kill our bees.
