Lone Star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) are now established and expanding throughout New England, driven by warming climates. Known for an aggressive, fast-crawling nature, they are distinct for the white spot on females and for transmitting Alpha-gal syndrome (a red meat allergy). They are common in coastal MA, CT, and RI, with confirmed sightings across all New England states.

When do we see dog ticks? When do we see Blacklegged ticks (aka deer ticks)? These graphs are part of a presentation that Bebop Labs gave at an elementary school.
We see dog ticks mostly April through September. Their peak season is June. Dog ticks are brown and about the size of an apple seed. They don't carry much disease.
We see Blacklegged (deer) ticks all year round. They have two peak seasons: May and October. Blacklegged ticks (deer ticks) are reddish or black and about the size of a poppy seed. We have found that about 40% of blacklegged ticks in NH carry disease.

May is peak season for Blacklegged (Deer) ticks. These ticks, about the size of a poppy seed, can carry disease, like Lyme disease. About 40% of blacklegged ticks carry a disease. The best way to protect yourself is to do a tick check every evening after coming in from the outdoors.
Pictured is a female blacklegged tick (L) and a male blacklegged tick (R).
We are still collecting all ticks for research. We track ticks and tick-borne diseases in NH. Remember to mail us any ticks you find to BeBop Labs, PO Box 183, Salisbury, NH 03268.

Blacklegged (deer) ticks are already active across New England. Peak season for blacklegged ticks is May so we are already seeing an increase right now.
Adult deer ticks are quite small, about the size of a sesame seed. Female deer ticks have a small reddish patch near the body, while males are darker all over. Compared to dog ticks, they appear smaller and more slender, which can make them harder to spot.
Remember to check for ticks daily after spending time outdoors!

As temperatures start to warm, blacklegged ticks (aka deer ticks) are already active in New England. Adult deer ticks are small, about the size of a sesame seed. Females have a slightly lighter, reddish area behind the head, while males are darker overall. Unlike larger dog ticks, deer ticks are more delicate-looking and much smaller, which can make them easy to miss. Because they can carry diseases like Lyme, itβs important to start doing regular tick checks now.
