The trailer sounds very true about insurance and doctors not knowing how to treat Lyme disease. But don't get freaked out because there are some success stories too.

It's helpful to know the seasons for tick species in New England. Dog ticks are most active April through July. Blacklegged (deer) ticks are most active April through July and again September through November.

Dog ticks are the most common tick found in New England, and luckily they don't tend to carry much disease. Blacklegged ticks (aka deer ticks) can carry Lyme disease. About 37% of blacklegged ticks in NH carry Lyme. Lone Star ticks are rare in New England but we are starting to see just a couple each year. Lone Star ticks can carry the disease that causes a red meat allergy.

Blacklegged ticks, aptly named for their black legs, are often referred to as deer ticks. Bebop Lab's research has shown that about 37% of Blacklegged ticks in NH carry Lyme disease. Check yourself daily for ticks, as Lyme takes 24-48 hours of biting time to actually transmit.

Lone star ticks can carry the disease for a red meat allergy. These ticks are usually found in the southern states, but we have seen and collected a few in New England (7 Lone Star ticks in the past 4 years). The adult female is distinguished by a white dot or “lone star” on her back.

To remove a tick, grasp it with tweezers as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward. Once out, clean bite area.

Ticks transmit disease from their midgut and salivary glands so removing its head is important. It varies on how long it takes to transmit disease based on which disease, anywhere from seconds to days. Some Blacklegged ticks (aka deer ticks) carry Lyme disease that takes 24-48 hours of biting time to transmit. Make sure you are performing daily tick checks!

Lone Star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) are more common in the southern states but they are slowly encroaching up to New England. Bebop Labs has collected 7 Lone Star ticks in the past 4 years. Lone Star ticks can carry diseases, including Alpha-gal syndrome which is a food allergy to red meat and other products made from mammals. Check for ticks daily!
