WELI Mentor Spotlight:
Monica Tovar, Director of Sales for KWAV, 101.7 The Beach, The Hippo, KPIG and 95.5 BOB

“I could tell you all day long about the obstacles I’ve faced,” Monica reflects. Growing up in East Salinas, it’s easy to focus on adversity. “But I never saw the boundaries, I never heard the voices telling me I couldn’t rise up, I always believed there was more in me. I never focused on the negativity.” Instead, Monica focused her energy on changing her surroundings, improving herself, and advancing towards where she wanted to be.

It’s easy to look at Monica’s 20+ year career in radio, television, and digital media, to appreciate her many successes in sales, marketing and public relations, and to never realize the humble beginnings and the personal life challenges that she’s overcome.

Monica started working summers in a law firm when she was just 13 years old, converting files to microfilms for the office. One of the lawyers sat her down and said, “Do you know where you are? Not a lot of young women with your background, at this age, have this opportunity.”

The message was loud and clear and one that Monica has carried through her whole life: Learn from those around you, ask questions, fully embrace the experience. “That’s when I learned what opportunity looked like. And how to use it to improve myself, as a person and as a professional.”

When Monica thinks of the Women’s Education & Leadership Institute (WELI) at Hartnell College, she thinks of the doors of opportunity. “I wish I had a program like WELI when I was growing up,” she shares. “WELI is a door of much more opportunities than our mentees even realize exist. Because of WELI, women scholars are placed in front of local leaders in the community and you can just see their eyes light up when they connect with a particular woman who inspires them. Congratulations to Sharon Dilbeck for heading up the first (Women of WELI) WOW-CON team to raise $5000! Sharon has been an amazing supporter of WELI for years, has co-chaired the WELI Forum, and is now making amazing strides to fund scholarships, mentoring and life skills training for even more young women in our community! $5000 is enough to support TWO women for TWO years through their Hartnell College experience and to change those two live forever! WOW-CON Featured Woman of WELI! Martha Gustavson has set an ambitious goal of raising $1500 to support women who are reaching towards their educational goals. She is just $25 away from $500! Who will jump in an help Martha reach her goal?
Martha had the following message for her friends when she asked them to jump in and help:

Hello! WELI is a program that is near and dear to my heart--it is a fantastic program through Hartnell College that provides women with leadership training, an on-campus community, mentorship, and financial support.
I am looking for some interested individuals who want to join my fundraising team for WOW-CON, which is our online fundraiser in place of the WELI Forum this year thanks to our good friend COVID-19. If you have an interest in joining my team, fundraising for WELI, making a donation, or just learning more about the program, send me a message!
Here are some of the things donations to the program can provide for a student:
• $2,500 will provide scholarship, mentoring, and support for a woman working to change her life through education
• $1,000 will cover the cost of textbooks and supplies for a student for a year of education
• $500 will pay for textbooks and supplies for a student for a semester
• $150 will pay for a textbook and supplies for one class for a WELI scholar
Here are some awesome facts about WELI scholars:
• 72% of WELI scholars have graduated with a certificate or degree, versus 41% of women with the same GPA who were not in WELI.
• WELI scholars transfer at a 65% rate overall, versus 38% when compared with other female students who are enrolled in at least 9 units with at least a 2.5 grade point average
• 84% of our current students receive financial aid
• 63% are the first in their family to attend college, and 52% are mothers
