Colorado Mountain College Salida

Today is officially Jamie Kruis’ last day as the Assistant Dean of Instruction at the CMC Salida campus and we are losing one of the great ones.
Jamie began working for Colorado Mountain College in 2014 as a part-time employee at Central Services in Glenwood Spring. A few years later she was promoted to the Executive Admin for then COO, Dr. Matt Gianneschi.
In 2020 Jamie was one of the first staff members at the brand new Salida campus and has worked extremely hard over the past 6 years to help set up CMC Salida for long-term success. She’s hired, supported and mentored hundreds of adjunct faculty and has played a vital role in helping us identify community needs and finding experts to teach in those areas.
Thankfully Jamie will continue to teach a few courses for CMC as an adjunct faculty member and she’s sticking around Salida.

FLY TYING 201:
Class dates: April 8, 15 and 22 from 5:30-7:30pm.
This three-session class will teach you the basic skills and knowledge needed to tie your own fly patterns. Each class will build on the last, and cover a specific type of aquatic insect, including midges, caddis flies, mayflies, and stoneflies, and will feature some of the most popular patterns used in the region. You will learn the skills you need to set up your own tying station at home, or be ready to join in local fly-tying events with confidence!

Today is officially Amy Stanley’s last day as Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at the Salida Campus! Amy joined CMC in 2016 at the Chaffee County Center in Buena Vista as the sole full-time CMC employee in Chaffee County. After surviving annexation and the vote of the people in 2019, she helped launch the brand-new Salida Campus in spring 2020… during a pandemic.
As one of our very first staff members, Amy brought unmatched institutional knowledge, steady leadership to our small-but-mighty team, and exceptional care and support to every student she served. While we’re sad to see her leave our halls, we’re proud she’ll continue supporting CMC students college-wide in her new advising role. Thank you, Amy. You’ll always be part of Salida’s story! 💙

CMC Salida’s EMT Program is levelling up. Faculty and community members dive into training with Mama Anne, our newest high-fidelity birthing simulator designed to improve real-world outcomes.

Last week CMC Salida Campus VP, Ben Cairns, joined a group of Salida community leaders for the ground-breaking of Phase 1 of the South Ark Neighbourhood, to develop more sustainable housing opportunities in the community.

Registration is open for our October session of the Aging Mastery Program. The Aging Mastery Program (AMP) was developed by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and has been successful at helping older adults build their own playbook for aging well. This AMP session, led by Molly Bischoff, is a fun, innovative, and person-centered education program that empowers participants to embrace their gift of longevity by spending more time each day doing things that are good for themselves and for others.

Salida Campus is excited to announce Heidi Slaymaker as our new Academic Coordinator!

Heidi has been working in a part time role at CMC over the past year, developing a wildfire mitigation certificate program. Prior to that, she was a high school science teacher at Salida HS. From Heidi, “I’m excited to expand my role at CMC as an academic coordinator and be back working with high school students. When I’m not at work you can find me hiking in the mountains with our 2 dogs.”

Heidi will have office hours at both the CMC campus and Salida High School.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11 and honor the courage of those who respond in times of need. This day reminds us of the strength found in service, the power of resilience, and the responsibility we share to support and protect one another—now and into the future.

Walking Like Mountains: The Science and Spirit of Sustaining Mountain Communities
The relationship between science and spirituality is one of the most pressing issues of our time. While science can tell us what is, spirituality can tell us what ought to be. The process of creating sustainable mountain communities helps us tap into our sense of wonder and bridge the age-old rift between science and spirit. Drawing from conservationist Aldo Leopold's famous essay "Thinking Like a Mountain," Dr. Langmaid's talk will explore how we can deepen our scientific literacy and spiritual intelligence by "Walking Like Mountains."
