We're so proud of our garden interns from summer 2026! The campus garden is looking better than ever thanks to Mac McElfresh, Niyia Fields, Helena Bart, and Kara Hopkins. These students grew produce, herbs, and pollinator friendly plants; they established a compost pile and looked after the fruit trees; and they installed a taller fence to keep the garden safe from deer. College

We're so proud of Verity Beard, who completed an internship as a Water Quality Monitoring Specialist for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality last summer! She spent a lot of time outdoors collecting water samples from lakes, rivers, and streams for analysis. Roanoke College

We're so proud of Makenna Keith, who completed a Summer Scholars research project with Dr. Crozier this summer, testing local waterways for benthic macroinvertebrates -- and thus pollution -- using DNA analysis! Roanoke College

We're so proud of Sydney Walton, who completed an internship at Mill Mountain Zoo last summer! She worked with zookeepers to care for animals, and completed a research project about social media response rates, focused on posts about Rita, the Military Macaw pictured with her here. Roanoke College

We're so proud of Julia Kwasnick (far right in the photo) who completed a research project about soil chemistry this summer at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln! EC Scholars Photo makes it into the National Wildlife Federation magazine advertising a grant program that we participated in a couple of years ago. So for full disclosure, the caption is a little misleading. We did put up bat boxes but here we are standing by a native bee box..... Nonetheless - super cool : -)
