This is not new, however according to AARP, in recent years the number has spiked due to twin crises - opioids & covid. Over 40% of grandchildren are displaced due to parental drug abuse, 28% due to neglect/abuse, 11% due to death - recently 140,000 children have been orphaned due to covid....

High schools around the country are pushing for staff to facilitate FAFSA completion at school. The problem with this practice is that school administrators are expecting untrained staff to guide you in filling out one of the most important financial docs of your life. Emotions & proximity typically steer most college application decisions. But if you think of colleges as either "buyers" or "sellers" you'll come to understand why most people are flawed in their reasoning for who to apply to. "Sellers" are colleges that have plenty of applicants due to their name recognition, football team or whatever makes them highly sought after. They are the "haves" of college admissions which means they don't need to do much of anything to get applicants....
