- SCAM ALERT -

We continue to receive reports of individuals fraudulently posing as Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies in phone scams. Recent reports have mentioned calls about needing to pay fines for missed jury duty. We still hear that people also impersonate actual deputies. Please remember we will never call you to say you have to pay for missing jury duty. Missing jury duty does not result in an arrest warrant.

Is this a scam?

Please be cautious and know the signs:
- Payment Demands?
MCSO will never ask you to pay a fine over the phone—and we absolutely will not ask for gift cards, Bitcoin, or any other type of electronic payment.
-Weird Meeting Spots?
We do not meet people at gas stations, kiosks, or parking lots to collect payments.
-Strange Phone Numbers?
Scammers can spoof caller ID to show as "Marion County Sheriff’s Office" or even use a real employee's name. If something feels off, hang up and call our non-emergency line directly at 503-588-5032.
- The Reason for the Call?
Common scam excuses include “missed jury duty” or “active warrants.”
Please remember:
Missing jury duty does not result in an arrest warrant.
If you did have a warrant, we wouldn’t call to warn you—we’d show up in person.

You do not need to pay to avoid being arrested.

We will never ask for payment through Bitcoin, gift cards, or other untraceable means.

If you’re ever unsure, trust your instincts—hang up and call us directly.

This event is an opportunity to listen, learn, and better understand the experiences behind re-entry. Every journey is different, and behind every re-entry story is a person working to rebuild connections, find stability, overcome barriers, and create a new path forward.

Weekend Recap:

On September 20th our weekend deputies:
• Conducted a traffic stop on Connecticut Ave SE, where they found drug paraphernalia. The passenger, Joel Torres (40), was found to have a loaded fi***rm, which was stolen, concealed on his person. Torres, a convicted felon, was lodged at the Marion County Jail for Resisting Arrest, Felon in Possession of a Fi***rm, Theft in the First Degree, and multiple warrants.
• Located a stolen vehicle. The driver, Jason Kiser (40), was taken into custody. Deputies lodged Kiser at the Marion County Jail for Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle, 2 counts of Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon, and a Parole Detainer
• Attempted a traffic stop on a miniature motorcycle for violations on Brown Rd NE. The rider fled, and deputies did not pursue. Deputies later observed the rider crash. The rider, Thomas Ortiz (47), was treated for injuries and taken into custody. Ortiz, a convicted felon, was found with a loaded fi***rm and narcotics. Ortiz was lodged at the Marion County Jail for Felony Attempt to Elude Police, Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine, and Felon in Possession of a Fi***rm.

On September 21st our weekend deputies:
• Located a vehicle driving recklessly on Lancaster Dr NE. The driver, Breven Strong (23), was taken into custody. Strong was lodged at the Marion County Jail for Felony Attempt to Elude Police, Reckless Driving, and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants.
• Conducted a traffic stop on a male on a bicycle for violations on Blossom Dr NE. The male was identified as Kevin Aguilar (34), a convicted felon. Aguilar had a restricted weapon concealed on his person. Aguilar was lodged at the Marion County Jail for Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Escape in the Third Degree, Giving False Information to a Police Officer, Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon, and 2 felony warrants. Kevin was lodged at the Marion County Jail.

Join our Cadet Unit! 👮‍♀️👮

Our cadet mission is to help youth leaders become familiar with the law enforcement profession, responsibility, teamwork and leadership skills. Our volunteer Cadets, ages 14 1/2-21, are involved in many community activities and events. The program provides a valuable link between the public, our youth and the Sheriff's Office.

Program Activities:

Traffic control at various events.
Security at various events.
Crime prevention presentations.
Assist deputies on ride-alongs.
Compete at Law Enforcement Challenge
Assist with prevention education to peers.
Crime scene security.
Community policing.

Come join us on October 7, 2026, from 10 AM - 12 PM at EZ Orchards (5504 Hazelgreen Rd NE, Salem, OR 97305) to meet some of your local MCSO deputies and see some Sheriff's Office vehicles. This also happens to be National Coffee with a Deputy Day!
