Canobie Lake Park: The Perfect Setting for an Emerging Technology

WCVB Channel 5 Boston’s long-running news magazine, Chronicle, was a national pioneer in high-definition television. In the late 1990s, the show tested some of the very first commercial HD cameras and editing systems in the industry. In 2001, Chronicle host Mary Richardson and her production crew arrived at Canobie Lake Park equipped with prototype HD cameras on loan from Panasonic.
Canobie served as an ideal testing ground for early high-definition technology. It offered the high-speed motion of the Yankee Cannonball, the vibrant colors of the Kosmojets, and the intricate textures of the carousel—the exact visual elements needed to prove that HD was vastly superior to standard definition.
Was anyone at home actually able to watch the broadcast in HD? Probably not, although TV stations began implementing the new digital broadcasting standard in 1998, most viewers still owned traditional cathode-ray tube televisions and recorded their favorite shows on VHS tapes.
In 2001, when this Chronicle episode aired, fewer than 1% of U.S. households owned a high-definition television. Today, when we visit Salem’s historic, century-old trolley park, we can easily pull a smartphone from our pocket and record family memories in 4K resolution. This standard mobile format captures roughly nine times the pixels of that groundbreaking 2001 HD recording. So sad to hear of Linda Cornwell's passing. An SHS Class of '66 graduate, she was a dedicated executive secretary to Superintendent Dr Michael Delehanty, but many of you might remember her at the Woodbury School in the executive secretary position.

In the 1970s, school districts like Salem, began using the "check system" (check-plus, check, check-minus) to focus more on progress and less on stress. While traditional letter grades seem to offer more choices, they often force teachers to reduce a student's complex work down to a single, rigid number. A district might choose a check system because it gives a clearer, big-picture view of whether a student met expectations without creating anxiety over losing single points. School systems change their methods so frequently because of shifting political trends, new leadership, and pressure to try something new. This creates an ongoing pendulum swing: when traditional grading feels too harsh, schools switch to holistic systems like checks; but when those feel too vague, they circle right back to traditional grades. My first recollection of it was Miss Dacey's ninth grade Western Civilization class.

Here's a brief clip of the Salem High School Marching Band and Color Guard playing a post-game arrangement from the Grant Field bleachers. I believe that's Band Director Jack Caldon with the band. This one needs a date, if you were in this band, we would certainly like to hear more about it.
