After I wrote about the limitations of fully child-led learning, a few people understandably pushed back with versions of:
“But kids need independence.”
Yes.
Absolutely.
The goal of education should always be independence.
The disagreement is not about the destination.
It’s about how we actually get children there.
Because one of the most misunderstood things in modern education is this:
High-quality instruction is not about controlling students forever.
It’s about carefully transferring responsibility over time.
That process has a name:
the Gradual Release of Responsibility model.

I’m looking for seven teachers who are ready to become exceptional reading teachers.

Together, we’ll study the science of Foundational Reading Skills and learn how to deliver them through the Decoded Methodology—an explicit, systematic, multisensory approach designed for students who need reading instruction to finally make sense.

This is one of the most common questions families ask:

“What type of dyslexia does my child have?”

It makes sense. We want clarity. Categories. Something we can point to and understand.

But here’s the truth: Dyslexia is not a collection of separate “types.”

It is a language-based learning difference that primarily impacts:

Phonological processing (how we hear and manipulate sounds)

Decoding (reading words accurately)

Spelling and written expression

What does vary is how it shows up.

This deck is designed to build phonological awareness through play. Every card has at least one matching partner, allowing students to practice rhyming, beginning sounds, medial vowel sounds, ending sounds, and careful listening.

1. Sound Detective

Spread the cards across the table.

Call out:

“Find a word that starts like sun.”

“Find a word that ends like cat.”

“Find a word that rhymes with cake.”

Students become detectives, searching for the correct match.

Skills: Rhyming, phoneme identification, auditory discrimination
