Birches Academy Welcome to our page! 'Like' us for updates on The Birches Academy - a tuition-free charter school in Salem, NH serving K-8 students

The inspiration for our tuition-free charter school in Salem, NH, and the surrounding Southern NH area, comes from a dedicated group of women that were brought together for an alternative school choice in our area. One of the greatest advocates for a child is their mother, and in this instance, each of us have many aspects of our lives, but our resolve is for our children and the children of our community. We each have independently been dedicated to volunteer efforts within our children’s school, and the community, and have placed a high importance on the education and support they all receive.

Math + Fresh Air = Learning Beyond the Classroom!

Who says math has to happen at a desk? Our Spalings 1 class took their learning outdoors and put our beautiful new outdoor classroom to good use!

Students have been busy turning word phrases into numerical expressions and mastering the order of operations (PEMDAS)! Using parentheses, they learned how to show which calculations come first, while working with partners to explain their thinking and solve problems together.

We love seeing our students take advantage of this wonderful new learning space! Our outdoor classroom is more than just a change of scenery—it's a place where curiosity, collaboration, and creativity come together.

Growing Together, One Adventure at a Time!

Our 6th Grade Leaves recently headed to Camp Lincoln for one of our favorite annual Birches traditions!

This day-long adventure is about so much more than just getting outdoors. It's a chance for our students to challenge themselves, build confidence, strengthen friendships, and discover the power of teamwork and resilience.

As our Leaves begin their middle school journey, this trip marks a special milestone—their first opportunity to come together as an entire class since making the transition to middle school! 💚

Through team-building challenges, problem-solving activities, and plenty of laughter, our students learned the importance of communication, perseverance, trust, and supporting one another.

At The Birches, we believe some of the most meaningful lessons happen beyond the classroom. Camp Lincoln helps our Leaves grow not only as individuals, but as a community—building connections and memories that will carry them through their middle school years.

Here's to new adventures, stronger friendships, and continuing to grow together! 🐻💚

🦁💛 A ROARING THANK YOU to the Salem NH Lions Club! 💛🦁

We are grateful for our continued partnership with the Salem NH Lions Club and their dedication to supporting the health and well-being of students in our community!

As part of Lions Clubs International's Week of Service – Vision, the Salem Lions have kicked off their annual vision screenings in Salem's elementary schools, including The Birches Academy! 👓 These free screenings play an important role in identifying potential vision concerns early, helping ensure students receive the support they need to see clearly and succeed in the classroom.

But their generosity didn't stop there! During their visit, the Lions also dropped off a wonderful donation of snacks, wipes, and tissues for our school nurse's office! These everyday essentials make a big difference in helping us care for our students. ❤️

Thank you, Salem NH Lions Club, for your generosity, service, and continued partnership! We are fortunate to have community organizations like yours who truly live the spirit of giving back.

🧦🧤🧣 Brrr…Tober is BACK! ❄️
What started in 2015 with two Birches students, brothers Henry and Thomas Griffin, has grown into one of our favorite community traditions.
Originally called Socktober, their mission began as a way to support Blanket Me and neighbors experiencing homelessness in the Merrimack Valley. Over the past 11 years, the Birches community has donated more than 10,000 pairs of socks — and last year we expanded the drive to include even more winter essentials.
This year, from October 22–28, we’re asking our Birches Bears and our community to help us collect 1,000 NEW winter items, including:
🧦 Socks
🧤 Gloves & mittens
🧢 Winter hats
🧣 Scarves
All donations will be distributed to local nonprofit organizations serving individuals experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in our area.
🏢 Local businesses — we’d love to have you join us!
Businesses can become a Brrr…Tober Collection Spot, organize an employee drive, or donate winter items directly to The Birches Academy.

Kindergarten Lottery is NOW OPEN!
Is your child ready to begin an exciting school journey filled with creativity, curiosity, and hands-on learning?
The Birches Academy Kindergarten Lottery for the 2027–2028 school year is now open! Our kindergarten program combines Arts Integration, STEAM learning, creative problem-solving, and a whole-child approach to help young learners grow, explore, and thrive.

📅 Lottery deadline: January 25, 2027
🎂 Students must be 5 years old by September 30, 2027
👫 Siblings must also register by the deadline.
For families interested in other grades, applications may also be submitted to join our waitlist.

🎨 Meet the creative minds behind our vibrant Art Program! 🎨
At The Birches Academy, art is more than a class — it’s an opportunity for students to explore, experiment, create, and express themselves!
Mrs. Hawkes, who joined Birches in 2014, brings more than 18 years of art education experience, along with a lifelong love of creating. From painting pet portraits to tackling her own artistic projects, she brings incredible creativity and enthusiasm into the classroom every day.
Ms. Deastlov joined Birches in 2024 and is currently pursuing her degree in Art Therapy, with plans to continue on to earn her master’s. Her love of painting, music, and creativity brings a fresh and exciting energy to our students and our art program.
Together, Mrs. Hawkes and Ms. Deastlov make our art rooms colorful, inspiring spaces where imagination is encouraged and every student has the chance to create something uniquely their own. 💚🧡
We are so lucky to have this talented duo helping our young artists discover just how much they can create! 🖌️✨
