Oregon School for the Deaf Welcome to Oregon School for the Deaf: Empowering Students with Language, Culture, & Community! This is a tuition-free educational placement.

The Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD) is one of Oregon’s oldest and proudest schools. Established in 1870 by the Oregon Legislature, OSD serves children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Located in Salem, OSD provides a high quality, comprehensive educational program for students in kindergarten through age 21. Approximately half of OSD’s students are day-students, while the other half are residential students, living in residence halls staffed by highly trained, caring individuals during the week and go home each weekend. OSD is a potential educational placement for any child in Oregon who is eligible for special education services due to a hearing impairment. The program is funded through the Oregon Legislature and overseen by the Oregon Department of Education. Representatives from a child’s local school district, regional program, and OSD, along with the student and parents, make the placement decision together. The personal and academic accomplishments of the students and the professional achievements of the staff reflect the hard work and commitment of the OSD community. Last week, our students had such a fun and memorable experience celebrating Deaf Awareness Month with Ian Sanborn and Scotty Keller from ASL SLAM!

The students got to jump right in with poetry, ASL storytelling, and all kinds of fun challenges. They copied ASL stories that became more challenging as they went, tried telling stories with a fixed facial expression, and even had an ABC/1-10 speed challenge to see who could sign through the letters and numbers the fastest!

It was so fun to watch them get involved, try new things, laugh, and learn along the way. The students were challenged to think and use their ASL skills creatively.

Our cross country team continues to make great progress this season. 🏃

Our very own student, Jorryn, is currently ranked #1 on the 2026 Deaf High School Cross Country Performance List for the 5,000m, with a new personal record of 18.39.9. He also broke the OSD record of 18:42.6, set by OSD alumnus Taylor Clark in 2012. 🏆 ⏱

It's exciting to see our runners setting new personal records and supporting each other as a team.

This thought-provoking documentary explores the history, challenges, and lived experiences of Deaf students in American education. It also highlights the ongoing fight for language access, educational equity, and the freedom for every student and family to choose the educational path that best meets their needs.
