To our Stephens students of color, specifically our Black and African American community: The Adam Stephens School Counseling Team has an obligation to end racism and bias, while protecting student well-being. The deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd as well as countless other black Americans show a dark and tragic racial division that persists in the United States. This racial division seeps into our systems and institutions. The educational system is not immune to this. Even though some progress has been made, there is much work to be done. We vow to be part of the solution. We will start this by advocating, listening to your stories, learning and refusing to be silent to injustice. We vow to identify gaps in achievement, opportunity and attainment for our Black and African American students, create a sense of belonging, work to end racism by partnering with stakeholders focused on anti-racism/bias, and acknowledge our own privilege to examine our practices. We hear you, we see you, and will empower your voice. If you would like to reach out, we are here for you.
