At The Phoenix School, being intentionally small means something.

It means teachers know their students—not just as learners, but as individuals. It means students are known by the whole community, supported by strong relationships, and encouraged to grow with confidence.

It means older students can mentor younger students, teachers can notice when something feels different, and every child has space to be heard, challenged, and celebrated.

Water World at Phoenix Summer Adventures!

What if our world were almost entirely water? Our Summer Adventurers spent the week exploring that question through hands-on challenges and experiments!

They built floating cities and rubber-band-powered boats, created watersheds, tested water quality, learned from beavers, and explored local tidepools.

Just another week of learning by doing, getting curious, and having fun!

Wonder leads to discovery!

Our students kicked off a wildlife animal project by coming up with their own wonder questions about the animals they wanted to learn more about. From there, their learning took shape in so many ways: creating wonder journal spreads, designing animal enclosures, researching and writing, and carefully drawing their animal enclosures in their math journals.

And yes—there was math involved! Students had to make sure their measurements were accurate as they worked.

This hands-on project brings together science, math, art, and writing while giving students the opportunity to ask questions, make choices, and follow their curiosity.

At Phoenix, learning doesn't always fit neatly into one subject area—and that's exactly the point.

We’re so excited to welcome our newest students and families to The Phoenix School!

Our community is already getting to know their curiosity, creativity, and unique personalities—and we can’t wait to see where this year takes them.

At Phoenix, being new doesn’t last long. Students quickly find their place, build friendships across ages, take on new challenges, and become an important part of our community.

What a great first week back with all of our K–8th graders!

The first week at Phoenix was full of reconnecting, learning new routines, building community, and, of course, having some fun along the way.

Students:

✨ Shared stories from their summers and presented their summer reading projects—including stop-motion videos and photography inspired by summer trips.

🎭 Worked in groups on team-building games, including charades, where students had to collaborate, communicate, and present their ideas to the class.

🎂 Created their own birthday cakes for our birthday board—complete with the correct number of candles for the age they’ll be turning this year!

🦁 Began their first team project by choosing an animal they wanted to learn more about, developing “wonder questions,” and thinking about how information can be presented in different ways.

And throughout the week, students were getting back into the routines that help make our community work: taking responsibility for their own materials, talking with their partners, working with their teams, and learning how to turn to one another when they have questions.

It was a busy first week and a wonderful start to the year! We’re so glad to have everyone back.

Our 6th–8th graders are back and they’re ready to lead! Over the past few days, they’ve set goals, built community, and prepared for the year ahead. They’re already thinking about what it means to be a strong mentor to our younger students.

Through games and activities, they practiced giving clear directions and thinking about how they can communicate effectively with their younger partners. At the Willows, they put their teamwork to the test by designing and building a raft that could actually float! They also created welcome-back videos to share with the rest of the Phoenix community.

At Phoenix, leadership isn’t just a title. Our oldest students are mentors, role models, collaborators, and an important part of what makes our multi-age community special. We can’t wait to see how they step up, take on new challenges, and lead with curiosity, kindness, and confidence.

Questions are where learning begins.

At Phoenix, we believe some of the best learning starts with a simple “I wonder…”
Why does that work? What would happen if we tried it this way? Is there another way to solve it?

We make space for students to ask questions, follow their curiosity, try, rethink, and discover—because the process of learning is just as important as the final answer.
