Traditions are an important part of every culture. They remind us of our history and values and provide comfort and continuity, particularly during times of challenge and uncertainty. Willamette’s enduring traditions, like the annual lighting of the beloved Star Trees, give us a chance to pause and reflect, reminding us of the special bond we share as members of the Willamette family.
Planted in 1942, these five giant Sequoias are the largest on any college or university campus in the U.S. They are called the Star Trees because when you walk into the middle of them and look up, The branches make the shape of a star.
This year's Lighting of Star Tree, our community enjoyed music, cocoa, and s’mores. The event was followed by the Family Holiday Concert, featuring the University Chamber Orchestra, and a fun holiday dinner in our dining hall, Goudy Commons.
As a Bearcat, this is an experience your students can look forward to every year! As we approach the holidays, the Office of Admission wishes you all a happy holiday and new year.
