Meet today's Viking Tales Alumni Spotlight, Emily Rubin '19G:

"I pursued my MSW degree at Salem State University for several reasons.
As an older student, I had a busy schedule: I was on the faculty at UMass Chan Medical School, alongside raising teenagers.
I appreciated the flexibility that was offered at SSU, and I was able to enroll in courses that accommodated my personal and professional schedules.
Another big perk was that SSU was so much more affordable than other MSW programs in the area.
It was a long four years but after I passed my licensure exams, I was able to accomplish two important goals: my first goal was opening a part-time private practice with a special focus on supporting families of individuals with disabilities.
My second goal was publishing a book about an intervention I developed to support families of youth with behavioral health needs.
It was during an independent study with Professor Michael Melendez at SSU that I wrote an early draft of my book - Supporting Siblings and Parents of Children with Behavioral Challenges. It was recently published by NASW!"

The Salem State University music and dance department will offer two free concerts to the community in August, with the Salem Community Band performing outdoors on Monday, Aug. 3, and the Summer Orchestra performing on Sunday, Aug. 16.

The Aug. 3 concert, scheduled for 7 pm, will take place on the Marsh Quad within the Harrington Campus, 71 Loring Ave., and feature the Salem Community Band under the direction of Cynthia Napierkowski. It will also feature Essex County District Attorney and Salem resident Paul Tucker ’87, who will provide narration for one piece in recognition of the nation’s 250th and Salem’s 400th anniversaries.

Concert-goers should bring chairs and blankets for lawn seating. Picnics are also encouraged. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will move inside to the café space within the Harrington Campus Classroom Building, located in front of Marsh Hall.

On Aug. 16, Salem State’s Summer Orchestra will present its annual concert in the Classroom Building’s Recital Hall. The group, directed by Salem State music and dance professor Mary-Jo Grenfell, is now in its 11th season.
