All undergraduate, graduate school, and honorary degree alumni are automatic members of the Salem State University Alumni Association and Foundation. This page was created to keep you connected to the university and informed on the events and services that your alumni association can provide you. Gender and the Armenian Genocide: A Workshop for High School Teachers

During the Armenian Genocide, more than one million men, women and children became the victims of genocidal violence. Please join the CenterforHolocaustandGenocidal Studies for a workshop on the Armenian Genocide and the role of gender in the lived experiences of victims and survivors. During the workshop, educators will be provided with a historical overview of the genocide followed by sessions focused on the gendered experiences of women and children and strategies and resources that can be used to teach this topic effectively.

Salem State University has opened the Feed A Viking Market, transforming the university’s student food pantry from a small, limited space into a larger, dedicated retail-style environment where students can access food, toiletries, hygiene products and other basic necessities at no cost.

“Dignity is at the heart of this Market,” said Ian Wong, director of Student Wellness CARE at Salem State. “When students walk into the Market, we want them to feel like they’re shopping, not asking for help. That shift in experience matters just as much as the food on the shelves. It tells students they belong and matter here, and that using this resource is part of a caring
community.”

Fourteen Salem State University students, educators and community members spent nearly two weeks this summer traveling through Northern Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia, visiting the places where some of the darkest chapters of 20th century European history unfolded and examining how that history continues to be remembered today.

Students participating in the program were supported by Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies scholarships made possible through Combined Jewish Philanthropies and donors to the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

Paul Chiano, a student in Salem State’s Holocaust and Genocide Studies certificate program and professor at Massasoit Community College, described the trip as an example of the potential of experiential education.

“THIS is what experiential learning should look like and be modeled after,” Chiano said. “The educational objectives of the program are applicable to teachers and students alike, and the learning that takes place will serve as the foundation of novel lesson plans and forward-thinking curricula.”

25 years ago the terrorist attacks on 9/11/01 killed 2,977 victims, ages 2-85, with many more dying in the years since due to physical and mental illness.

413 were first responders.

206 were from Massachusetts.

At least one known victim was a Salem State alumnus and his beloved wife.

We will never forget.

🧡147 grads who completed their 2026 educator license program at Salem State University were honored this past spring at the 12th annual Sheila P. Kearney ’54, ’67G Educators Pinning Ceremony.

🧡With more than 24,000 alumni, the McKeown School of Education has a long history of preparing educators who make a difference.

🧡More than 285 educators graduated from the McKeown School of Education in the spring and entered the workforce as teachers and academic leaders.
