APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE to Program Members SARA SLACK and CIARA TUCKER as well as the rest of the superb cast of "Empty Space," selected as part of the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. This MSJU Theatre Arts Production glowed with humor and heart and reminded us that we can't live on this planet--or hundreds of miles above it--without relying on each other. Oh, and Shakespeare and toilet paper help, too!

This is Olivia, a Junior in the Honors Program. As the semester comes to an end all the Honors students plan to gather at our end of the semester Food 4 Thought event where we spend time talking amongst each other sharing what we have all been up to throughout the semester. As Honors students in many different degree paths, it can be a challenge to keep up to date on what projects and events that we have had the chance to partake in. This event is a great way to learn more about other degrees and see all the unique and interesting ways that other students have contracted honors courses or furthered their studies with projects.

Hi. This is Natalie Rhein. Have you ever wondered about the stigmatization that often surrounds those with disabilities? Did you know that around the time of the Holocaust, there was a Eugenics Movement in which many individuals with disabilities were targeted because of their "undesirable" traits? As a member of the Honors program, I presented at the MEHA (Mid-East Honors Association) conference, speaking about the shift that has taken place when it comes to how those with disabilities are often viewed. So, let's try and be advocates of change by reflecting on the following quote: "The severity of one's disability does not determine their level of potential. The greatest barriers that persons with disabilities have to overcome are not steps or curbs, it's expectations" (Karen Clay).

This is Conner Harney, junior honors student here at the Mount. Having had a few weeks to look back at the experience I had at the 2021 Mid East Honors Association conference, I would like to share my thoughts and experiences. I had the privilege of participating in this prestigious event, sharing my progress and involvement with certain projects at my current position at the sanitation district in Covington, Kentucky. Using operations management methodologies learned in class, I was able to observe current problems, creatively come up with cost effective solutions, and restructure employee’s ways of thinking. This was increasingly challenging given the time frame, but am very thankful to have been able to professionally represent Mount St. Joseph University. I look forward to challenging myself further with future honors endeavors, and encourage you all to do the same.

Hunter Mills says…
I am in HON 301 this semester, and I recently presented at the Mid-East Honors Association (MEHA) 2021 conference. The annual MEHA conference allows honors students and professors from many different colleges and universities to meet and learn together. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was held online this year. Although it would have been great to meet in person, the leaders at MEHA handled the situation very well. Instead of using zoom or Microsoft teams, they opted to use Gather.town. This program allowed people to walk around and talk as if they were at a real conference. It was a very interesting experience, and it reminded me of some old video games I used to play. While at the conference, I was able to “walk” around and visit many different presentations and posters. I learned a lot of new and interesting information regarding disease names, teaching strategies, and even history. When it was my turn to present, I met and talked with professors and students from many different programs. Each of them had great questions and comments that made the presentation enjoyable. Overall, the conference was a positive experience, and it was nice to meet and discusses information with other honors programs.

Hello everyone, this is Olivia. I'm a member of the Honors Program and the Student Environmental Enthusiast President. On Saturday, March 27, the Mount had its first campus wide trash clean up. I am happy to announce that we were not able to fill up a single black garbage bag with all the trash picked up throughout the entire campus and parking lots. Interestingly the 2 most common types of trash that were picked up were water bottle caps and cigarette butts. Keep up the great work at keeping our campus free from trash.

Fourteen members of the Mount's Honors Program are attending the Mid East Honors Association Conference this weekend, this year held in Utopia! Thanks to conference organizers and the virtual space app, Gather.town, we are able to walk, talk, meet, and present. A perfect solution for meeting far-less-than-ideal circumstances.

Congratulations to Maria Aguilar for earning a scholarship from the English Language Learning Foundation!! ELL provides support through educational programs and scholarships to students whose first language is not English in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region. Maria was honored with her fellow recipients at ELL's virtual recognition brunch on March 20.

Maria Aguilar says...
I’m in HON 201 and I was very excited to hear that volunteering at Be Concerned was one of our service projects offered. I went to Be Concerned’s United Ministries in Erlanger, Kentucky, which is only a few minutes from my house. There, I learned so much about how this nonprofit organization works and about the struggles that people in my community face. I learned about the different options that they offer their customers to help with them with bills, housing, and other necessities. I was also able to talk to other volunteers about similar struggles that we may have experienced growing up. As a nursing major, I was very excited to find out that one of our volunteers was a nurse. I was able to get her perspective on how it is being a nurse during a pandemic and how rewarding a career it is. As a volunteer, I helped by gathering groceries for the customers and I was also able to help by helping a Spanish speaking customer get the information she needed. I think this was the highlight of my experience because it made me aware of the language barriers that can be an issue when trying to receive or give help. Overall, my experience at Be Concerned was very rewarding and I am so glad that I was help those in my community.
