Acton Academy Salado

Acton Academy Salado The mission of Acton Academy Salado is to build a community where children thrive in their individual way.

Our aim is not to teach, but to guide the children so they understand the art of learning.

Tools & Systems... But why?

Raise your hand if you’ve ever talked with your child about calling 911 in an emergency.
Now, keep your hand raised if you’ve actually practiced or role-played an emergency situation with your child.

Why do we, as parents, do that?

You might say, “So they know what to do if it ever happens.” Or simply, “For practice.”

What you’re really doing is putting a family system in place.

Calling 911 is a tool within that system. Talking through when to call, what to say, knowing your address, and practicing different scenarios teaches your child how to successfully use that tool when it matters.

At Acton, we do the same thing.

Our studios are filled with tools and systems, and every one of them has a purpose. We don't expect learners to automatically know how to use them. We introduce them, practice them, sometimes stumble through them, reflect, and practice again.

Because the goal isn't perfection.

The goal is to develop learners who know how to think, problem-solve, take ownership, and navigate challenges independently.

A few fan favorites:

3B4G : Brains, Books, Buddy Before Guide
Before asking a Guide, learners first use their own brain, available resources, and their peers.

Why?

Because instead of passively waiting for an adult to provide the answer, learners practice asking questions, solving problems, seeking resources, collaborating, and following their curiosity.

The tool may seem simple, but the system is building independence and resourcefulness.

Contracts
Contracts exist all around us.. mortgages, cell phones, employment, extracurricular activities, leases, and more.

The studio is no different.

Our contracts, created by the learners themselves, clearly define what each member of the community is responsible for and establish a process for accountability when those commitments aren't upheld.

The contract is the tool.

The bigger system teaches learners something far more important: your word matters, commitments matter, and communities work when people hold themselves and one another accountable.

And just like you wouldn't practice calling 911 with your child once and assume they've mastered it forever, we don't introduce these systems once and move on.

We practice. We revisit. We fail. We adjust. We try again.

Because we're not building learners who can perfectly follow a system.

We're building lifelong learners who know how to successfully navigate one.

Hope your week is off to a great start!

BUILD THE TRIBE.
INCREASE AGENCY.
PURSUE EXCELLENCE. 🦁

Our North Star for 2026–27.

At Acton Academy Salado, our goal has never been to simply prepare learners to pass the next test or move to the next grade.

We’re preparing them for life.

This year, we’re being even more intentional about creating a community where learners:

✨ Know themselves -discovering their strengths, interests, values, and the person they want to become.

🤝 Find their people -building real friendships, learning to collaborate, and discovering what it means to belong to a tribe.

🤞 Make meaningful promises -and learn that their word matters.

💪 Do difficult things -developing the courage and resilience to struggle, fail, adapt, and try again.

🌎 Contribute to their community -because their gifts aren’t just for themselves.

🚀 Prepare for a life of purpose -not someday, but starting now.

There will be challenges. There will be big questions. There will be moments when Guides step back so learners can step forward.

And through it all, we’ll keep returning to one question:

Is this helping me grow-or distracting me from who I want to become?

We can’t wait to welcome our heroes back on September 9th!

Let’s build the tribe. 🦁

Dear Community,
Acton Academy Salado is growing, and we are looking for two Apprentice Guides to join us for the 2026–2027 school year.

Apprentice Guide – Acton Academy Salado
Part-Time or Full-Time

About Acton Academy Salado:
Acton Academy Salado is a learner-driven community built on the belief that every child is capable of changing the world. We are not a traditional school. There are no lectures, grades, or one-size-fits-all teaching. Instead, learners take ownership of their education through hands-on projects, Socratic discussions, real-world challenges, and meaningful work.

Position Overview:
We are seeking Apprentice Guides who are currently studying education, child development, psychology, or a related field and feel inspired by the Acton model. This role is ideal for someone who wants real-world experience in a learner-driven environment while growing as a leader, mentor, and guide.
This is not a traditional teaching role. At Acton, Guides do not lecture or manage through rewards and punishments. Instead, they ask thoughtful questions, model curiosity, uphold studio systems, and support learners in taking full ownership of their journey.

Responsibilities:
• Support a calm, engaging, learner-driven studio environment
• Build strong relationships while maintaining high standards and accountability
• Assist with launches, projects, studio systems, and transitions
• Encourage independence, problem-solving, and responsibility
• Model professionalism, curiosity, and a growth mindset
• Help prepare materials and maintain organized spaces
• Supervise learners during studio time, outdoor play, and events
• Participate in team meetings and leadership development
Qualifications
• Currently pursuing a degree in Education, Child Development, Psychology, or related field
• Passion for learner-driven education
• Alignment with Acton Academy’s mission and promises
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Self-motivated, dependable, and adaptable
• Open to collaboration and coaching
• Experience with children is a plus, but not required

What Makes a Great Fit:

• Believe children are capable of more than traditional systems allow
• Value curiosity, responsibility, and personal growth
• Prefer mentoring over directing
• Are energized by innovative education models
• Want meaningful, hands-on experience

What You’ll Gain:

• Mentorship from experienced Acton Guides and leaders
• Real-world experience in learner-driven education
• Leadership and communication development
• Practice facilitating rather than traditionally teaching
• Opportunity to grow within the Acton community

To Apply:

Please send your resume, along with a short introduction sharing:
• Why you are interested in Acton Academy
• What inspires you about working with young people
• A book, experience, or idea that has shaped your view of education
