Based on the Pedagogy of Real Talk by Paul Hernandez, College 101 supports the educational pursuits of St Pete's at-risk youth.

We're a committee of Eckerd College students dedicated to bettering the situations of and creating opportunities for at-risk youth in the St Petersburg area using higher education as a medium. We work through encouragement, offering resources, and developing meaningful relationships. The program's committee consists of Jennifer Chavez, Chelsea Gaines, Anjali Boyd, Bianca Santos and Colin Hilliard.

Last month we had a whopping 50 students from Thurgood Marshall Middle School come to Eckerd College. We were extremely happy to have them learn about what is the meaning of college and how they can reach their goals. We hope to expand our club next year and bring more students to join in on the fun!

Special thank you to our sponsors and volunteers

What got College 101: Combining Passion and Education started?

This simple fact sparked a passion to mentor students:

Ninety-five percent of black students are failing reading or math, making the black neighborhoods in southern Pinellas County the most concentrated site of academic failure in all of Florida.

Ranked by the state Department of Education, Melrose is the worst elementary school in Florida. Fairmount Park is No. 2. Maximo is No. 10. Lakewood is No. 12. Campbell Park is No. 15.

College 101 hopes to make a difference by guiding students into a successful academic/social lifestyle.
