Not many headlines illustrate “Preparing kids for life, not the next test or grade” better than this…

It shouldn’t be stressful for young people to be gainfully employed (even at 18-20 years old):
1. Identify a job/field they’re interested in
2. Network and build relationships with folks in that world
3. Intern and work your butt off wherever you can get in 🤷

Oversimplified? Maybe

But a heckuva lot better than having parents whispering in your ear on a zoom interview 😵

On the last day of school, the kids were genuinely bummed.

Certainly different than the excitement I remember feeling at the end of each school year 🫠

Disappointed because they didn’t want the year to end with multiple parents asked about summer options (in the future we’ll have this).

If you’re a parent looking at schools, that’s one of the first things I’d tell you to look for.

Ask any school: do the kids actually want to be there?

And here’s the second question, definitely the harder one: can they show you exactly how each student is getting better?
Not grades or “she’s doing great!”
Specific improvement that you as the parent want to see.

She couldn’t read that book in the fall and now she can. He needed his fingers for math facts in January and now he doesn’t.

If a school can’t point to the exact thing, be skeptical.

Here’s where Apogee stands on both.

That first question? The end of last year told us we nailed it. Kids sad that school is ending is about the best feedback on engagement you can get.

The second one is where we’re pushing ourselves.

Tracking each student’s progress in a way we can clearly show parents was a known gap for us last year.

We knew the kids were growing, we could see it every day, but “trust us” isn’t good enough.

That’s a big focus for next year: making every student’s progress visible enough that you never have to wonder.

Both are important. A kid who loves school is a kid who will develop a growth mindset.

And a kid who can see their own progress starts to love the work itself.

Ask both questions wherever you’re looking (Including here as many of our parents do).

POV: it’s August, you’re scrambling for a school that doesn’t make your kid hate learning, and we’re posting “enrollment full” 🙃

Don’t be that parent.

We have a FEW spots left for next year. Not “a few” like when restaurants say they’re busy. We’re capping at 20 students to start this year and filling up fast!

2, 3, or 4 days a week. Your kid gets real-world discussions, experiential projects, outdoor time, and a tribe of like-minded families.

The puzzle’s almost done. Your family might be a missing piece.

Adventure Day was one for the books! 🐢🌿

Yesterday we welcomed Mr. Doug the Reptile Guy, explored local wildlife while walking the bridges, climbed the observation tower for a picture-perfect view, and tackled a fun nature scavenger hunt together.

There’s something so special about building community while exploring the beauty of St. Pete, one adventure at a time.

A few updates as we get ready for next year!

1️⃣ Excited to announce we’re doubling our space and moving into the larger suite at our current location.

2️⃣ We’ve expanded our coaching team and have 4 coaches hired for next year, each one bringing a wealth of different experiences that tie into our educational philosophy!

Year 1 was great, but even more excited for Year 2 and beyond 😎🙏

Mr Doug is back and this time we’re taking it outside.
On Friday, July 10 we’re heading to Weedon Island Preserve for an Apogee Adventure Day, and if you were around for the reptile show, you already know the kids are going to love it!
Expect creatures, exploration, and a few surprises only Mr Doug can pull off.

Nobody teaches you how to think about risk.
Every decision is a bet, so is every non-decision.

But most people only count the risk on one side of the ledger (making the decision), but what about:
- The person who never starts the business.
- The adult who waits forever to commit.
- The parent who delays peanuts to “play it safe” (and ends up with the allergy because science).

Trying to eliminate risk just hides where the risk went.
You can’t opt out of risk, you can only choose which risks you’re taking, knowingly or not.

Schools stopped teaching this (or maybe never did).

At Apogee, we help kids learn how to think, not what to think.

The world doesn’t reward people who avoid decisions, it rewards people who can make them well and get back up even when they don’t work out.
