Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath) Independent non-profit mathematical sciences research institute founded in 1982 in Berkeley, CA, home of collaborative research programs and public outreach.

We are saddened to report that Katharine Meacham passed away on April 11th at the age of 103. There is a memorial service for her on May 24 at 2pm in the James Center at Eckerd College.

Katharine was the matriarch of the Meacham family and she initiated and endowed both the Meacham Mathematics Memorial Award, the M^3 Award, and the Meacham Mathematics Memorial scholarship fund.

The M^3 Award is presented to a graduating senior each year for outstanding achievement in mathematics. It was initiated in 2002. The M^3 Scholarships are awarded each year to 2-3 students who are majoring in mathematics and have financial need.

Katharine’s husband of 56 years, Bob Meacham, was the founding faculty member in mathematics at Eckerd College in 1960.

Congratulations to Dr. Mark Lewis. Mark is a 1992 alum who double-majored in mathematics and political science. In 2023, he received Eckerd’s Kadel Award for outstanding achievement. Last month, Mark was elected president-elect of the international professional organization INFORMS.

Dr, Shannon Barber-Meyer is a 1995 Eckerd alum who majored in biology and minored in mathematics and chemistry. In her career she has studied many animal species including wolves, whales, and tigers. Here is an article on tigers.
