Saturday, July 17th, is our next CCW class. A personal protection plan is designed not only to keep us physically safe, but legally, financially and morally safe as well. There is a lot to learn.
Behaviors prior to the event, during the event and after the event are of critical importance.
We always want to avoid an incident, but what if it was impossible?
Did you display your firearm? Were shots fired? What is your four-part statement to police? Is it enough just to be silent? When are you under arrest? Do you consent to a search?

Would you be surprised to find out that fewer than 20% of licensed permit holders actually carry their gun with them when out in public? While reasons for that abound, the number one reason mentioned is that their firearm of choice ended up being too heavy and too uncomfortable.
While we could argue that personal protection doesn't need to be comfortable, a better answer has evolved during the last decade, as gun manufacturers have continued to make smaller and smaller versions of their most popular fi****ms.
There is now an entire class of handguns referred to as "pocket pistols."
Smaller pistols do tend to offer smaller calibers and those smaller calibers have have been knocked for their lack of stopping power, but most permit holders have discovered that carrying a pocket pistol is so easy that carrying becomes almost second nature. And while a .380 caliber or smaller certainly has less stopping power than a 9mm or larger, it has infinitely MORE stopping power than the gun left at home because it was too heavy or too uncomfortable.

ONE LAST COMMENT: NEVER slide a pocket pistol into your pocket without a pocket holster. Loose change, keys, fingers, and even the lining of the pocket can easily slip into the trigger guard unless the pistol is properly secured in a holster that completely covers the trigger and trigger guard.

SHEEPDOGS Part 1.
Paraphrased from the book "On Combat" by Lt. Dave Grossman.

Everyone has been given a gift in life. Some people have a gift for science and some have a flair for art. And warriors have been given the gift of aggression. They would no more misuse this gift than a doctor would misuse his healing arts, but they yearn for the opportunity to use their gift to help others. These people, the ones who have been blessed with the gift of aggression and a love for others, are our sheepdogs. These are our warriors.

Let's expand on the sheepdog, sheep and wolves. In broad strokes. Broad strokes. There is no ill will in these descriptions. There is nothing morally superior about the sheepdog or the warrior. He simply has an advantage.

Most people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident. Sheep live in denial, this is what makes them sheep. They do not want to believe there is evil in the world.

Then there are the wolves. The wolves feed on the sheep without mercy. There are evil men in this world and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become a sheep. There is no safety in denial.

Then there are the sheepdogs. The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. They live to protect the flock and confront the wolves.

The sheepdog is a funny critter; He is always sniffing around out on the perimeter, checking the breeze, barking at things that go bump in the night, and yearning for a righteous battle.

Here is how the sheep and the sheepdog think differently. The sheep pretend the wolf will never come, but the sheepdog lives for that day.

Some people are destined to be sheep and others might be genetically primed to be wolves or sheepdogs. But I believe most people can choose which one they want to be and I'm proud to say that more and more Americans are choosing to become sheepdogs.

This was a great win. Judge Benitez was articulate and reasonable. Read his order. “This case is not about extraordinary weapons lying at the outer limits of Second Amendment protection,” Judge Roger T. Benitez wrote. “The banned ‘assault weapons’ are not bazookas, howitzers, or machineguns. Those arms are dangerous and solely useful for military purposes. Instead, the fi****ms deemed ‘assault weapons’ are fairly ordinary, popular, modern rifles. This is an average case about average guns used in average ways for average purposes.”
