New Podcast Episode | The Sonography Lounge – Episode 55

How can point-of-care ultrasound help close diagnostic gaps in regions where access to traditional imaging and other healthcare resources may be limited?

In Episode 55 of The Sonography Lounge, Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute’s Lori Green and Trisha Reo sit down with Dr. Philip Angelides, an internal medicine hospitalist at the University of Colorado whose work focuses on global health, tropical medicine, and POCUS education.

Dr. Angelides shares his work at Hospital Nacional de Coatepeque, a 230-bed public hospital in southwestern Guatemala, where he leads a ward-integrated POCUS curriculum in collaboration with local physicians and educators.

The conversation explores how portable ultrasound can provide an accessible, affordable, and immediate diagnostic tool in resource-limited environments and how sustainable ultrasound education can help expand its impact.

In this episode:

• POCUS in global and resource-limited healthcare
• Addressing diagnostic gaps with portable ultrasound
• Development and implementation of IM-FAST
• Case studies from rural settings
• FAST exams, ultrasound-guided central line placement, triage, and other applications
• Building sustainable POCUS education in Guatemala
• Expanding access to ultrasound education globally
• Opportunities for POCUS clinicians to teach, mentor, review images, and collaborate

We’re sharing a short clip from Episode 55 here, but there is much more to this conversation.

How Much Pressure Is Enough During DVT Ultrasound Compression?

It’s one of the most common challenges when learning DVT ultrasound—and applying too little pressure can make a normal vein appear noncompressible.

In our latest GCUS blog and Ultrasound Hot Tip, Karen Avgush, MD, shares a simple technique that can help you determine whether you’re applying adequate compression:

Instead of focusing only on the vein, watch the adjacent artery.

Apply steady downward pressure until you see the artery begin to compress slightly. At that point:
• If the vein completely collapses, this represents a normal compression response.
• If the vein remains partially open despite adequate compression, the finding should raise concern for possible DVT.

Dr. Avgush also discusses another important source of error: probe position. Keeping the transducer perpendicular to the vessel and applying pressure directly downward can help prevent a normal vein from falsely appearing noncompressible.

It’s a simple visual cue that can make your DVT compression technique more consistent and reliable.

Want to take this Hot Tip from the screen to the scan lab? Techniques like DVT compression ultrasound are incorporated into applicable GCUS live courses and hands-on scanning workshops, where participants can practice directly with our expert faculty.

Learn it. Practice it. Apply it in clinical practice.
